Re: Getting hired

Pick up the phone and find out who is the pilot hiring manager. Call them directly and tell them. Otherwise, try being creative. Fed Ex this update directly to that person with a quick note that you don't wanna miss out.

Re: Getting hired

By my count AC has hired about 200 Jazzers, Now, They need to hire the rest but some are saying no and some are deferring. This means that future courses may have more than %20 OTS. They have over 700 applications since March 01. I heard that resumes are sorted based on the amount of items you can c...

Re: YYC Base? YYC/YEG commuters?

This is not an easy question. I commute to YVR on the EMB. I hold a block so this is an easy commute. I get a lot of overnights at home. I can usually check in mid day and check out with two flights to spare. The 1 in 50 flight attendant rule has freed up a second jump seat as well. Between WJ and A...

Re: Contrail Requirements

That is totally true. AC had guys with a year of jet experience were upgrading in 2007. His approach is flawed. When the majors started hiring heavily in 2003 pilots were leaving quickly. Companies were having a hard time getting Captains to meet his numbers. In fact, I watched horrified as they hir...

Re: Employee Seating

Filling up J with randoms from the back sounds like a smart idea, but it is not. The J passenger paid or used an upgrade to get there. To have someone sitting next to them bragging about a free upgrade would not look so good.

They have a system, and a pecking order that is followed.

Re: WJ pilots reject tentative agreement

I like the CEO's response and I hope he genuinely means it. What a concept... working together instead of the "Us" vs. "Them" crap at Air Canada. This situation is not that different than AC. TA1 bargained through interest based bargaining. The pilots reject it. ACPA messed around with TA2 and the ...

Re: Making a great Salary now, should I move?

Lets face it, most pilots get in to taste the big stuff. I knew thats what I wanted from the get go. Is it what I thought, not totally, but I still like it. I would sit down with my current employer and have a polite chat. You really have nothing to lose. They expect some to want to go. They will se...

Re: Making a great Salary now, should I move?

I always advise people to go. Give it a try. It's easier to go back to where you were, than wish you were at AC 5-10 years later and never tasted it.

You will in all likelihood not crack $100 000 for 6+ years.

Re: Air Canada Pool

With the new contract, jobs are now spread along the base of all FO and Rp positions. This will mean longer stagnation in junior positions, especially with "60" no gone. My opinion, the LCC will be the place to be. Socialized scheduling....The guy who choses something else may see reserve for a long...

Let's put the Doctor comparison away. Doctors make top dollar the first day after residency. So, from age 26 or later it's good money. Career earnings are not close. Lawyers work their way up but on average make more than pilots over a career.

Your money is worth less. Pay is not increasing with actual inflation. This is the destruction of the middle class.

Ian Gordon - Selkirk College

Ian Gordon passed suddenly last week. After retiring in early 2000, Ian moved to Airdrie to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Ian was the heart of Selkirk's CRM program and taught advanced level classes. Any of us lucky enough to have sat in his classroom, or to have had him in the cockpi...

Re: Recent Experience

Lets be clear, if you get called for an interview, you meet the minimums for them to fly the plane. Stop looking at your logbook and consider that they are hiring people, not log books. Why would they waste time interviewing unqualified people? 704, float, military, bush, medivac, charter, traffic a...

A myriad of reasons. Lifestyle, base, ego, personal situation or a lack of choice. I think that new hires will be offered slots amounting to the size of the class at which names will be drawn. This will be based on company demands. It will not be a free for all for the 240 open spots. The dynamic wi...

Re: Sky Regional vs Mainline

That thought process is old school. Each class I have seen is an eclectic mix of pilots from across Canada. Minimums haves steadily dropped in time. Racing to a 705 will just put you in with 400-1500 other pilots that may or may not be trying to move up as you are. The application process showed int...

Years ago I received the " competitive candidate letter". This was similar to the pool letter. The above post is right. The pool is formed, and when needed they cherry pick the candidates they want. Those with weaker scores may swim for awhile, but once passed over for 6 months were sent a different...

Simple answer.

It is easier to go back later than to wait to go.

Get a type rating, see if it fits you, and keep your doors open.

Most that I know that decided not to, regret it later.
