The thing is, a new hire will only get to pick from the positions made available during the groundschool, which would likely never include the captain spot. I heard 700 new hires and 500 retirements in the next 10 years at AC. These are rough figures, so if I'm wrong please do correct me.

That does not add up to 1200 new hires. Still just 700 (of which 200 are new positions). So 62% flow through.
