Re: Question for Those in Training or in OJT
Not YYZ, but I was in a similar position. I ended up renting a room in a house because it was more economical than trying to fund a 2nd place on my own, especially given the lack of a paycheck. I tried to get home to see the wife and kid as often as possible, which worked out to 1 or 2 weekends per ...

Re: ATC/FSS Candidate Reality Check
1. Do ATC/FSS trainees in the Vancouver FIR have to accept job placements assigned to them when they complete their training, regardless of where they live? You do not really get a say in where your first posting will be, although they may ask what you prefer. If the YVR FIR trains/hires you, then ...

I don't work in a tower so I skipped some of your questions.. hopefully this helps in any case. 1. If currently live in London and would like to remain in SW Ontario. If I get past the online tests and do to the assessment section at the YYZ ACC, and make it all the way through the process and get o...

Re: IFR or VFR employment situtation in Gander or St. John's
As I understand it, there is a fair number of internal seniority bids for the gander region each year. This makes it more difficult to get in as a lower seniority controller or ab initio student - but certainly not impossible. I would question the info you've been given. As I understand it, Gander ...

Re: Has anyone ever successfully got offered training "quick
It's in large part luck of the draw - you can't do the next step when they aren't running it. It took me 2 and a half years from application to course start. The others I trained with were similar (~2 years). However I've certainly heard of it happening quicker. Hopefully the timing works out for you.

Re: CYYZ checkout rate?
I should have been more clear. I meant folks signing up for VFR atc in Ontario...are they all being lined up for Pearson to start or are any of them getting a fighting chance and going to lower grade towers within their region? They could be sent to any tower in the YYZ FIR initially. As I understa...

The link you posted stated about 1% of applicants get training offers (~50/4000).. so logically i'd imagine edmonton is slightly better than that if the stated info is national.

Re: Question for atc
It's likely one of two things: either a position hand off took place, or a trainee who had an instructor step in. If both controllers are licensed, the position handoff occurs when the active controller is ready and involves a verbal briefing to the relieving controller first about traffic, weather,...

I would call or Google NAVCANADA for the latest updates and information .. Expect Churchill or something far North as your first posting .. GL! That isn't necessarily correct. The location of your first posting depends on the stream you are selected for, and the FIR in which you apply. Each FIR doe...

Re: Helo Pilot to ATC
There are a decent number of ex-military controllers where I work. I imagine the experience would be looked upon favorably in the selection process. It seems to me that the duration of the application process, in part, comes down to luck/timing. There are several steps that need to be passed prior t...

Re: ATC Training (housing)
Since the cornwall closure, housing is the students responsibility. Normally if you are given a training offer you will know several months before the course actually starts, so this does give you some time to plan the move. I ended up using kijiji to find housing, looking for people with a basement...

Re: How long between 1st and 2nd interview?
I waited just under a year between 1st and 2nd interview, and it was over 2 and a half years between when I first applied and when I started training. It seemed like just as I was about to give up on the process they called me for the next step. A big part of how quickly the application process goes...

Re: Which Regional Airline would you like to work for
I'd actually love to fly for any one of the ones on the list, I literally just can't afford to. Not when housing in Canada is running at large multiples of income, especially low incomes like those. I know the Canadian way is to take on massive debt to make up the shortfall but I'm not going back t...

Re: YVR Assessment Nov 14th
That is what I was told in my telephone interview. There is no guarantees. However, if they have paid x amount of dollars to train you and you have 3 years experience at an FSS facility I would find it hard to believe that they wouldn't AT LEAST just put you on standby and let you know when an FSS ...

Just got the green light from the 2nd interview, but was placed in the FSS stream - so that's the end of the line for me. Best of luck to the rest of you in the process. You may already be aware of this, but after 3 years of FSS you are able to bid for training spots in IFR / VFR courses. Additiona...

To answer your other questions... It says for example that there is an unpaid classroom course for up to 6 months, now i am just curious as to how someone survives for 6 months without any income coming in? I saved up about 10k prior to the course starting, and somehow convinced the banks to give me...

Re: Considering this.... But hows it possible!!
Can be longer than 6 months depending on stream and specialty (can also be quicker, depending on the same variables). I'm coming up on 8 months, will be 9 by the time I get paid if the course continues to go well. EDIT: To clarify... FSS tends to be approximately 4 months unpaid. Tower tends to be a...

"controlling IFR traffic is akin to having a super computer implanted between your ears." Gimme a break. I'm so sick and tired of hearing that terminal or enroute controllers are gods.
