Re: In ‘stunning’ reversal, Pickering is asking for airport to be expedited

Why not just expand the YKF airport (10k foot 8-26, 7k foot 14-32), build a larger terminal on the north side of the airport, add another ILS? The land is there (would need to take some land from the turf farm off shantz station), the airport is there with a new tower being built, and its near a fa...

Re: Excel flight school?

Got checked out with Excel last August after finishing my PPL elsewhere, really enjoyed my time renting there. Excel isn't a big school by any stretch, but they run a great operation there. The president, Roland, is a great guy who always took the time to answer my questions thoroughly, and he's act...

Re: Landing Fees

Another low time PPL here - I usually check the COPA Places To Fly website when planning my flights, I enjoy the format although you may want to double check when things were last updated for each airport (date at the bottom of each page).

Re: Mistakes not to be repeated

As a fresh PPL, I'll jump in. I was about 2 weeks away from finishing the accelerated PPL course I was on, but due to weather I was slightly behind schedule in the course. An aircraft had opened up Saturday evening, so I headed down to the airport to punch in the winds and do my long solo XC. The ro...

Re: Checklists

It's interesting to follow this as a fresh PPL. At the school I trained at there was of course checklists for the 172s we flew, which we were always instructed to follow. During the initial flights I flew I'll admit I was pretty reliant on the checklist for the majority of the flight, with the excep...

I did my flight test and exam back in early August, so I'll throw in my two cents worth also. Flight Test -Like others have said, keep talking. I was told to treat the examiner like my first passenger, so explain everything you do. Along a similar line, don't be afraid to verbalize ahead of time wha...

Cadet Gliding - Vulcan Airport

Hello all! Shot this quick video of a glider landing at Vulcan airport, my first try at filming so go easy :) The pilot had just completed a half hour familiarization flight after catching a great thermal, certainly a treat for the cadet onboard. Hope everyone likes it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re: Save the Air Cadet Gliding Program

However, in reality how many Cadets ever touch a Glider again after that training? In most cases the local Fam Teams are not eager to let the newbies in and Soaring Clubs are far too costly for 16 years olds. More than you would think actually. I attended RGS(NW) this summer, and keep in pretty goo...

Re: A sad day in Canadian Aviation...

As a current ACGP pilot, I can say with ease that this will have huge negative effects on the Air Cadets as a whole. This news was circulating at the Southern Alberta Gliding Center today, and needless to say was not well taken. I truly hope this is not confirmed, for the sake of all involved.

Re: Helicopter involved in Nunavut rescue goes down

The SAR Techs are a great bunch, they never cease to impress me. I had the pleasure of being onboard for a practice drop from a Herc, certainly impressive. Speaking of the Hercules, found this gem on CTV: "Search-and-rescue personnel already on the scene in a hovering Hercules Helicopter parachuted ...

If I'm not mistaken the A380 you saw was actually a Delta 747-400, diverting from its Detroit to Tokyo flight.

Re: Different Aircraft - Effect on Training?

Alright, thanks everyone for the quick comments! Very helpful, it certainly makes working on my licensing locally seem like a decent option on the Pipers, also works out to be a bit cheaper (maybe put towards tailwheel time!) Speaking of tailwheel, do any schools in Alberta offer a tailwheel convers...

Different Aircraft - Effect on Training?

Hello all, quick question. Does the type of aircraft operated by a FTU unit have an effect on the quality, or overall experience in your flight training? For example, a school I have been looking at (Excel Flight Training) only operates PA28 Warriors, Cherokees, and Archers, and for a twin has one P...

Re: Anyone know anything about Gimli (CYGM)?

I'm currently training out of Gimli with the air cadets, so I'll put in what I know. -Air Cadet ops typically start at 0700 and end at 2000, but for about 15min on either end the train of 5 gliders roll across the hardtop to taxiway Bravo to the cadet hangar. Advisory operates during those periods o...

Re: Does a good headset matter?

Heads up, newb question here! So obviously a headset would be a plus from flight training onto the regional airlines, but a what sort of point in your career do you stop carrying your headset to work? A large regional like Jazz? Or a major like Westjet? Then you switch to those small deals? Just cur...
