Re: Floatplane Crash Thread
I'm a LOW time float pilot, and I've had some good training including lifting a float to facilitate getting off the water more quickly when heavier, or glassy water or in other conditions. I've also spent about half my life sitting beside capable floatplane pilots and have witnessed various forms of...

Re: YQT to Southern Ontario on floats
If you decide to come via the Soo, let me know, I can help you with fuel/logistics. The Bushplane Museum downtown (CPX8 has docks and fuel available, but it can be a little tricky to get in and out of with the current, boats and shipping tankers. It can always be done, but most of us haul fuel manua...

Re: Tips on selling block time?
I have had some (good and bad) experience as a blocktime buyer over the years. Through that time I've made some connections with people in the space and the general feedback it that it's a lot of work, for very little return. You may break even at the end of the day, but it will take a lot of your t...

Re: Working ATC overseas
Serco provides Air Traffic Services in other parts of the world and there are a handful of Canadian controllers who have gone to work for them in retirement or under other circumstances. They are the ones who hire for the middle east jobs. I've not done it, but I've heard stories about it, some good...

I think all the criticisms here are valid and I'm far from a fan of the current governments, but I just want to point out that comments like: "And for those Trudeau fan boys -- more like adolescent groupies -- who don't like hearing this---" AND "Of course the lefties will go all hysterical a...

Re: Anyone from the sault want to state their own opinions of the school?
Funny thing though, I know a guy in the program right now, who's going to finish early... I'm sure he's the exception, and not the rule, but based on what I've read here over the last little while you'd think that would be IMPOSSIBLE! Of course, I don't think he's posting complaints on AvCanada. Mig...

Re: Tailwheel Instruction near Toronto
The most fun I had flying was in a taildragger at a local flying club (that no longer exists). Next time you see someone flying one, go chat them up and ask for a ride. Or join (or e-mail) a local COPA/EAA chapter and see if anyone there drags tail. I think there's a flying club at the Woodstock air...

Tip 1 of Nav is get your foot in the door. This is the most important piece of advice around here. Also, just because you write the assessment doesn't mean you'll get an offer to train, just because you get an offer to train doesn't mean you'll be successful. I always recommend that if you're inter...

Re: AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE IN GORE BAY, ONTARIO
There's a real shortage of good AMEs in North Eastern Ontario, I know that there are a few in YSB and NK4, but we've only got one at YAM and I know local guys looking for someone, floatplane guys, guys in Wawa, guys in Thessalon... a lot of guys are retiring too and that's leaving everyone wondering...

Re: Red Deer is getting a control tower
Blows my mind that YKZ doesn’t have a tower anymore but Red Deer does. Why? Traffic at Buttonville was wayyy down before the tower closed. Looks like 3,000/mth (36K/yr), I'd guess that Red Deer is pushing more than that. https://buttonvilleflyingclub.com/resources/Documents/Appendix-A-Buttonville-A...

Red Deer is getting a control tower
NAV Canada announced on social media yesterday (but not on their corporate website?) the following: We’re changing service at #RedDeer, Alberta in response to @flyreddeer ’s growing traffic – transitioning from aerodrome advisory services to air traffic control services by August 2021. If you're in Guelph, why not just use the Guelph airstrip? Or maybe someone from there can connect you with Reid's private strip near CYKF.

In the last contract, the National Bid Prog...

There was a water aerodrome on Puslinch Lake. Check out the Ontario Floatplane guys on facebook, or better yet, go to a BBQ at the Guelph Airpark on Thursday nights (weather permitting) and ask around.

If there are any young people reading this, the smartest thing you can do in today's stupid economy is get work (preferably transferable work - I like trades) and live in a market that's cheap to live in. I moved out of Toronto twice in life, and both times my quality of life and financial situation...

Re: Frustrations of a Military ATC and the Big Leap
I'll take a shot at answering... First off all, if you're interested, just apply and decide if you want to do it after you get an offer. It can take a long time to get an offer, so I typically just tell everyone to go for it. The national qualification rate is around 30% of people who are coursed, t...
