It is illegal for us (we have Private Pilot Licences) to fly our drone at our private grass strip (aerodrome).

Re: Today's almost useless question

I can't be bothered to do the calculations, but it might be useful if the GPS fails and he needs to rely on radio navigation that uses line of sight.

To be fair, the GST replaced a hidden 11% manufacturers tax that had the PST applied on on top. The hidden tax was not as broad in scope though.

Re: Light sport Airplanes

+1 on joining the local RAA chapter. Zenair is another option. They are located in Midland, so parts are readily available. The CH 750 is a very fun airplane to fly as long as you are not in a hurry to get somewhere. As the owner(and builder) of an amateur built, I can tell you that you must be very...

Re: Use of radio's in flight training

I was fortunate to receive some tailwheel training from a very well known (and very good) aerobatic pilot. I thought my radio work was OK, but I think he beat me up more for that than anything else. I'm glad he did because I made sure I reviewed the correct procedures and now feel much more comforta...

Yeah, but the helicopter that was doing the filming had 6 TIMES the horsepower ! :)

Lay off the bird strikes.

I never claimed to be an expert on anything. I only asked that we show the pilot a little respect - especially when we had no idea what happened.

I am done here.

Re: Ottawa small plane crash. No injuries.

I was only suggesting that there are possibilities other than pilot error. Yes, most "accidents" are caused by pilot error, but not all of them. Regardless of the reason, she got (or kept) the plane on the ground and walked away. Lets give her credit for that and not speculate that she tried to take...

Re: Ottawa small plane crash. No injuries.

Do you know something we don't know, because all the story says is that the plane hit a fence at the end of the runway? Maybe she hit a bird and decided to abort? There a lot of things that might have happened that were not pilot error, and even if it was "the pilot walked away uninjured" so she did...

Re: I wish new C-172s were a bit better.

This is true for comparing driving vs flying but it's not really fair as a comparison of engine technology. The point I'm trying to make is the Rotax drinks 17 litres per hour to make 60 hp, and a Honda R18 engine drinks 7 litres per hour to make 70 hp. [ Actually a car needs around 10-15 HP to mai...

Re: PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE WRITTEN

What stage are you at with your training? I found I did a lot better on the practice tests after doing my cross country and all the preparation for my flight test. As bverwegen said, it is important to actually learn and understand the material, and that comes from doing it for real - at least that'...

Re: Is this possible?

An Engineering degree is a great thing to have. You will never regret getting it, even if you don't pursue Engineering as a career. It is very possile to keep flying through University, as long as your finances allow. It is a lot of work, but you will have free time. Better to spend some of it flyin...

Re: Landing Flare

It is difficult for me to type and put into words the sight line process I use and teach for the flare / hold off / touch down process. But I will make this comment. If you are only taught the high flare wait for ground contact using power as a crutch how would you become accurate enough in height ...

Re: Landing Flare

I had a lot of trouble with this as well. I was diving in and trying to flare too aggressively, which would result in either a balloon or slamming into the runway. I went up with my father and he noticed this and said to start the flare higher and do it more gradually. It didn't take long for my lan...
