Re: Termination of CEWS on July 4th?

Jul 5th is the day that changes to eligibility can take effect. I can't find any reference to any publicly announced changes yet. As of June 17, 2020, the Federal Government’s website indicates that any changes to the eligibility criteria for the CEWS would commence as of periods 5 (July 5 to August...

Re: ATC Layoffs?

Lots of little changes happening, and we definitely went from understaffed to overstaffed but it's unclear to what degree yet. We are probably a week behind the rest of you. Traffic counts on Monday/Tuesday will probably dictate the next step.

Re: When is YYZ ACC the busiest?

Volume picks up in June. June to September would be Thunderstorm season, but you're not going to know ahead of time when the convective activity starts. I wouldn't worry about seeing busy traffic, you'll have plenty of opportunities once you start training. Also the "craziest traffic" is probably no...

Re: First time doing STAR's

If the ATIS has 2 different runways, you can guess/preplan 05/23 as your most likely runway from the DUVOS arrival. Unless there are delays/holding, it should be pretty straight forward to DUVOS. Just fly along and you will most likely be cleared to 9000, with the expectation you follow the publishe...

Re: TCAS RA between two DH8 at Sudbury

A tower at a place like YSB is not taking control at 200-400 ft (minimums). Certainly there can be efficiency with a tower at ceilings of 1000 ft, and significant ones if the vis/ceilings are high enough to allow auto transfer of control but low enough that a crew doesn't want to depart VFR. (e.g. 3...

Re: Sleep Apnea and Your Medical

If you are doing something about your sleep apnea (e.g. CPAP machine) there should be no problem. There are a handful of people at work with Sleep Apnea with no issue on the medical (ATC, Category 2 medical). I declare it on the form, the CAME asks if I use a machine, I say yes, every night (True), ...

Re: Deviate around thunderstorm?

Some sectors have a separate monitor nearby that shows big picture traffic flow, and a weather radar overlay. The weather info is usually much better than what's on our CAATS radar screen, but a) the monitor may not be to close, b) unclear how recent the images are, c) don't show motion, d) the imag...

Sooner is probably better, but the "tapes" are kept for 30 days so you have more time if needed.

So generic terminal is in fact the VFR course then? Perfect, thanks for clearing that up! I'm streamed YWG No, Generic Terminal is an IFR course. I'm not YWG, but generic terminal will be for Winnipeg terminal and any other similar specialties. The previous mention of arrivals and departures means ...

Re: Squawk Ident

One could ask himself if pressing the ident button is a means of acknowleding an instruction, why not press it if you are cleared to climb as well? It's one thing to argue whether a read back is required with CARS or MATS(manops). To say that starting a climb, or pressing a button without a full re...

I have no preference if you say "Identing", and/or "Passing through 5,700", or say nothing at all and just press the button. If you say the altitude, it saves me a couple words. If you don't, you save a couple words and I say the altitude.

Re: RVSM Airspace

The RVSM factor is a red herring here. The vertical split for Toronto is most commonly 230/240 then 270/280 (or other) depending on the sector. There are military areas over the Great Lakes that have changed their altitudes over the years. This would have had influence on sector divisions. Workload ...

Re: CYQA Muskoka FSS

Muskoka FSS closed at some point and the RAAS was moved to Toronto YKZ. Don't know the time or exact reason, but I assume it was for cost cutting. Not much happens at Muskoka in the winter. Toronto FSS closed around 2003 as part of the FIC-project restructuring. London turned into a FIC, and Muskoka...

Re: Direct routings

It depends if we know about the impact of the direct. If I don't know the answer, (e.g. is there a military area active multiple sectors away, or it interferes with a departure/arrival corridor, multiple sector boundaries, etc) we would ask via hotline. To an external agency I'd often just ask the o...

Mangia Cake
"Cake eater". A derogatory term used by blue collar Italo-Canadians used to describe commercialized middle-class WASPs. Italo-Canadians would view the typical daily diet of fellow WASP workers to be based on refined white flour and sugar.

Re: The number of STARs and SIDs at CYYZ

I'm assuming that count is each individual transition to a SID as a separate SID in that number. The SID's are much longer now, and encompass what would be preferred routings. Honest question, Is there much of a difference on your end if there's a short SID to 30 miles out of YYZ plus multiple prefe...
