Re: Why WestJet?
From what I can tell on the AC seniority and position lists, the most junior NB Captain in YVR was hired right at the beginning of COVID, so give or take 5 years seniority. With AC, it's important to note that there are literally hundreds of pilots who don't take a quick upgrade to get a better sche...

Re: AR program Did I read that right?
I chuckled at the comparison between the AR program and letting women fly. Is there an ICAO restriction on women aviators? Weak comparison. This is why Canadian Human Rights Law is a bit challenging. It's a multi-step process: 1- was there discrimination? 2- is there an exception? 3- If the excepti...

Re: Why WestJet?
From what I see Porter pay is very similar to WJ, and would be a much faster upgrade..? Don’t get me wrong I am still looking at westjet but seems like there might be other options. Who even knows when they will start hiring again. Their retirement plan looks a lot more attractive than Porter, but ...

Re: Why WestJet?
To be honest I don't know much about socialized bidding, so someone can correct me, but logically it's just not possible for everyone to get what they want..someone has to end up with the shit pairings. I wouldn't want to have 20+ years of seniority and not be getting exactly what I want in my bloc...

Re: 150 Pilots forced move out of YYZ
I definitely expect that WJ will lose many YYZ/YUL and former SWG YQB based pilots to AC, Porter and others. Commuting is not fun. While I'm sure the company has factored in attrition to its planning numbers and budget, I'd wager that they have underestimated the numbers for attrition. On the now ca...

Re: AR program Did I read that right?
Has WJ ALPA expressed any commentary on the new company edict? The reality is that an AR exception can only exist with an ally. So it will require either the employer or the bargaining agent or the CHRT to advocate. One can presume that the employer would only do so if retention of AR pilots was cr...

Re: AR program Did I read that right?
It's just sad seeing pilots who have benefited from mandatory retirement in this industry now try to take advantage of what is essentially a loop hole. This is a seniority based industry. There is no fountain of youth. You get on the carousel and enjoy the ride knowing full well there will be an en...

Re: AR program Did I read that right?
Every AR guy that I've flown with, save one, has been excellent. Even with a few years time on a Boeing and a few thousand hours 705 time, I learned lots. The pairings were genuinely enjoyable. While the previous AR program at WJ was going to be unsustainable, I question the method which the Compan...

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?
My understanding of vacation. WJ is credited a week as 5 days so credit value of week equals 5 times 4.5 hrs equals 22:30 of pay AC is 7 times 3:45 so equals 26:15 of pay So AC nearly 4 hrs more pay per week... WJ definitely not better... For 2024/2025 and 2025/2026, AC is 2h55m credit for each vac...

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?
Just want to point out that your and most credit systems are based on flight time and duty time, for example your easy YYC-YEG-YYC pairing for 1.5 flight time has a duty time of at best around 5 hours assuming a quick turn. You are at work for around 120 hours on a 80 credit month, I use the simple...

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?
Does WJ seriously only pay 1.5 and not double for OT? Sort of. Like Alaska, American, Breeze, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United, the starting Open Time rate is 1.5x. However, like Alaska, American, Sun Country and United, the company often puts out Open Time at 2x. At B...

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?
Lol Bede...you do realize WJ RIGs and your 50% OT is so far behind them it is comical. For example your 4 hrs duty credit has to be the worst in the world. Delta's min duty credit is 2.0, American's is 3.0, Southwest's is 4.35, United and a few others have 5.0. Definitely something to improve for t...

I don't see any bragging, he/she was just stating the facts. Next, it behooves pilots to understand the following concepts: -MMG vs Scheduling Window -block hours vs Credit Hours -Minimum Duty Period Credit -RIGS (Flying vs duty vs trip) -taxable benefits/employer contributions When you clearly don'...

It's disappointing when good things come to an end. I'm looking forward to flying with a number of old friends that are now joining the Teal Team and am optimistic for the future with the combined airline. In the context of Canadian charter airlines, only Air Transat has lasted longer than Sunwing d...

Amount should've been 10x more Non-unionized employees can have their employment terminated at any point. This can be either 'for cause' - the employee did something that reached the threshold for termination, or "without cause" - the employee didn't do anything wrong, the employer just doesn't wan...

Re: When Albert separate, will it keep Canadian licensing or go the FAA route?
So to get back to the original question, that of licensing. For aircrew, both Canada and the US have process in place to validate an aircrew license for a foreigner, those processes wouldn't go away. Alberta will likely have to put in place it's own systems eventually. But then the stickler, with A...

Thanks for the replies! When you do get a block what would that look like? Average number of days off? Is it reasonable to expect that if I ask for it I could only do single days or 2 days? Short answer: mostly yes, you can mostly get single or 2 days and you'll usually get scheduled between 13-16 ...

Re: When Albert separate, will it keep Canadian licensing or go the FAA route?
You're making the assumption that Canadian law/courts/constitution would be recognized by all parties at that point. Were there a successful secession referendum, I would suggest that the newly seceded jurisdiction would only go so far in placating the Canada kangaroo legal system. Of course 7/10 p...

This indigenous people crap again. Under the Supreme Court of Canada case, following Quebec's attempt for succession, they get no special treatment. They will have to seat down and talk, and yes, potentially lose their special treatment and exemption as the new entity has no agreement with them, an...

Re: When Albert separate, will it keep Canadian licensing or go the FAA route?
Who's Albert? What's succession? Everyone makes grammatical errors, even lawyer types. In my experience, if pilots made as many small mistakes as lawyers there would be a lot of aircraft off the end of runways. Lawyer types do make grammatical errors; I've made many. The OP is definitely not a lawy...

Re: Misc WJ questions
Would it be reasonable for a junior reserve holder to get weekends off? How many days per month do you have off when on reserve? Just the 12 I’m guessing? Would it be possible for somebody who is senior on reserve to get a short block of days? For example; at some airlines you only need to do 2 day...
