Re: Is Discovery air finished
Yes the old Discovery Air will be gone and they have already been delisted from the stock exchange. Discovery owed Claivest about $72,000,000 but by the end I believe Clairvest owned the vast majority of the Discovery shares. I would think that the CCAA protection will allow Clairvest to restructure...

Re: Flying to Alaska
Go in May, June or July and the weather will likely be fairly straight forward. I would say don't go if you are getting towards September or October. If you are departing a gravel airstrip don't do a mag check at 1700 rpm as you will wreck the prop! Checking it at say 1000 rpm should let you know if...

Re: Flying to Alaska
Take a few jerry cans with you for fuel. Being able to stop and pour in another couple of hours of fuel can take the pressure off if weather has been an issue or you had to turn back after several hours of flying. It can be a long way between places to buy fuel. Have fun! Camping beside your plane i...

Re: DHC-2 Crash - Northern BC
I doubt that a stall horn would have made any difference in this case. I can't imagine a 300 hr private pilot with less than 10 hrs experience with a Beaver on floats, recovering a 700 lb overweight aircraft (that takes climb power to maintain level flight) and that is 100 ft above the trees when it...

Re: What does a pilot look like?
I would say look like someone who can take one of their assets and bring in back safely every time. Who they hire has the ability to bankrupt their company if they have a nasty crash. Look like someone who any person would be comfortable putting their family in a small plane with. I'm not suggesting...

I have always used not less than 80 mph and flap at 'climb' until established on final. Worked for me so far!

The requirements could well be a moving target depending on season, upgrades etc. Don't over analyse, just apply showing how you have worked somewhere other than a big city. Hell, it doesn't even cost a stamp any more.

Re: Any legitimate Pilot bars left?
No more 'there I was at 10,000ft' in the Airport Chalet. Now the pilots are still at the office writing 'there I was at...' in their SMS report. I'm sure glad I started this caper a few years back.

I got to agree with Meat on this one. Not the newbies fault but going from an environment where the school may not even let you add oil to the engine and sometimes have weather minimums above legal VFR conditions, I can't in good faith let you blast off with someones family on board. If you don't le...

Re: Where are all the new GA planes?
Unfortunately the only way I see prices dropping significantly would be where the cost of owning a plane gets significantly higher, and I can see that happening over time. Parts keep getting more expensive, Cessna adds their aging aircraft/corrosion programs, AMO's are getting held by TC to more and...

This industry seems to be leveraged to the economy. By the time pilots start talking about how low time pilots are going straight to the majors in Canada, that is a good time to sell your shares and go to cash in your RRSP. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/westjet-bracing-for-prolon...

Re: Privately maintained vs commercial maintained
Commercial aircraft seem more likely to have complied with things like hydraulic lines replaced at X years like the manufacturer calls for and also things like the 5 year mag overhaul etc. Brake discs that are almost worn to limits are more likely to be replaced on a commercial aircraft etc etc etc....

Re: New Caravan Icing Course
I'm sure that is not a Cessna approved procedure but I will say the following. If I have ice on the wings of the Caravan I try and get about an extra 15% of airspeed by pitching down before blowing the boots. I believe drag increases by speed squared and drag is what helps shed the ice so a 15% spee...

Question from a dumb pilot. Does the 10 year overhaul time (constant speed prop) start from when it was overhauled or from when it was first installed on the aircraft?

Re: Why can't we do this here
The classic example is 'I am about to go to bed at 10pm and the phone rings and now I have to spend 12 hours on a long haul medevac'. The answer being suggested here seems to be that there would be say a 9am-9pm crew and a 9pm-9am crew and the 'fresh' night crew would do the flight. Sounds simple bu...

Re: Beaver chief pilot / ops manager Day VFR 703 SALARY ?
The big question is would you be getting paid year round or just for the season and then you are on your own for the winter?
The next question are you really taking full responsibility (long days and responsibilities) or is it mostly filling a title and the owner has all the responsibilities?

Compass? Do people still use those things? I think the last time I used one in anger was in the 90s. With people hanging their handheld GPS's, Spots, inReach's GoPro's, cellphones in the vicinity of the compass the batteries make them even more useless.

I imagine that none of the 'costs' included in the earlier posts don't include bank payments to finance the purchase. Anyway, my point is that the majority of the hourly cost of owning a certified private airplane are fixed or almost fixed like maintenance (an annual could be less for an aircraft th...

Good luck with that .. It sounds like a 'community service' / 'give-back' type program and worth doing. While limiting your market probably isn't a good thing, I would think that if the students already had say 500 hrs (1 season either on wheels or floats) they would get more from the 'advanced' par...

I think the days of making a bit of money flying over farms and then selling the farmer a photo are history. Any Joe Blow with a drone can do that now.
