Certainly not too old. I qualified at my first unit at age 37.Afterburner47 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 8:59 pm
At what point does age start to be a hiring factor? Not sure what the average or preferred age would be for an ATC trainee. For example, would someone in their early or mid 30s be considered too old to enter training?

Re: Extension to applications??
Only thing I find on CBC recently is this, but it doesn't mention all trainees being re-hired, only that "training for new controllers will continue" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/nav-canada-pulls-back-gander-losses-1.6054966 Oh, and this one about the $7M in bonuses paid last...

Re: ATC and you
At a tower I used to work at, one particular aircraft's base was at the far end of the usual runway in use (over 8000' long runway). If we didn't offer it, he always requested the long landing. The rules being that the preceding aircraft must clear the runway before a following aircraft crosses the...

Blah blah blah conspiracy theories ! No US carriers are flying in. Even if they are,( which they aren’t) so what.. ? At least our carriers and government is doing the right. thing. Really? Take 10 seconds and do a quick search. Tomorrow YYZ to ATL you have the choice of no less than 4 airlines (inc...

Re: Accomodating ATC
About 6 weeks ago I was denied entry into Class C for a flight from CYYJ to CBS8 due to "staffing shortages". I guess even with traffic down 75% there is still room to blow off VFR traffic...... It's quite a strange situation. They went from record high traffic numbers and big staffing shortages to...

Re: What's your favourite euphemism for a practice forced approach?
It's a little bit like overhearing people talking about someone's "junk" or "ladybits", but overheard in the circuit at a nearby airport, was a trainer asking for a "Bravo". My home base has everyone asking for a "sim-echo". Why the reticence, and what else have you heard a practice forced approach...

Re: Control Tower Tagalong?
As of right now, the answer would be no. Access to the towers/ACCs is still pretty restricted. Many Nav employees are still working from home, including some that were previously based at some towers, but aren't controllers/FSS. I imagine it will be quite some time before anyone who isn't absolutely...

Timmins was incorrect in their over reach and London FSS agreed and gave me an 800 number and suggested I lodge a formal complaint as this has happened several times, I didn’t and should have as this seems to be the only official Way to make change / educate and may maybe COPA. Not this blog I’m ju...

Re: MF
CYQA Muskoka is monitored by Timmons RDO, they need to be reminded it is class E not D or C airspace, they try to boss / intimidate VFR pilots around. They can’t stop a VFR from landing or taking off if the pilot deems the vis safe as your pilot in command and they can’t issue clearances to VFR pil...

i can tell you all right now that we will probably not have a bootcamp for quite a long time. Navcanada is a private business (with public regulation) and their operational requirements have changed drastically. Licensed controllers have recently lost their overtime hours and airlines are on the ve...

Re: Vfr
Does Toronto still have the TPP? My understanding is if you train in Toronto (IFR or VFR) you'll stay in Toronto and not have to move to another FIR? (apologies I hope I used the acronyms correctly) Yes, Toronto is still doing TPP for VFR trainees. Generally speaking, you'll stay in the FIR you tra...

Re: ATC beyond NAV Canada
Any chance you could find a way to the United States? Find a partner down south, perhaps? You need to be a natural born citizen to work IFR traffic with the FAA. They have independent contract control towers that are privately run but they take people with VFR licences. They dont train people off t...

Re: Toronto FIR Tower Salaries
It depends on how much OT is available at the unit but you could add 50% or more to your annual if there’s short staffing. Exactly. If you're willing to work the OT when it's available (and as mentioned above, almost all units have some, particularly in the summer when vacation time is in demand), ...

Re: navCANADA Ad for Training Course Spring 2020 on IGram
Do you guys find it a little bit weird to have NavCanada to post Ad on training courses for FSS for this instance on Instagram when you have your application and test done since more than a year and didn't have any returns from them... Not really. NavCanada is not going to stop advertising/looking ...

Re: Toronto FIR Tower Salaries
I understand that some or many newly licensed VFR controllers are placed in the Tower Progression Plan (TPP) in the Toronto FIR. That being said, I have the following questions: A quick correction on the wording you used. "newly licensed VFR controllers are placed in the Tower Progression Plan (TPP...
