Occupational Health and Safety.
Is it just me, or is CARs 703 still in the stone ages? When I compare industry accepted losses against mining and forestry, Airtaxi is consistently the worst of anything out there by far . Despite that, the general perception is that flying is one of the safest things a person can do. 703 has got to...

People are responsible for safety in all levels of aviation. The only thing that happened here was that holes in the slices of Swiss cheese lined up. Why do you have such a hard-on for the CP?

Re: High and long landings.
I don't know about overriding the pilots. But I don't see why there couldn't be a land/don't land calculation for landing much as V1 is for a balanced field takeoff. Might keep the runway available in the minds of the pilots during high workload landings. There is a hesitation to performing a go-aro...

Re: Peace Air crash in YXJ report on the web.
Why was an F/O with 250 hours and never minimal IFR skills assigned to this position before a very thorough and extensive line indoc? Because Transport Canada says you can. It really is that simple. If the regulating authority doesn't disallow it, and it will save a penny, then someone will do it. ...

Hate to say it but: This sort of accident is just waiting to happen again. With the job market the way it is the experience drain is really showing in the entry and mid levels of the industry. I couldn't help but be alarmed at the total IFR experience between the PIC and the FO... it was around 500 ...

I've decided to make this my crusade. Deal with it. I wish I was as good a pilot as you think you are. Do yo seriously believe that you would have done any better than the crew in the MU-2 that night? Pretty fuckin' arrogant of you to sit at you computer and assume that if you were driving everythi...

Re: Gear problem at CZBB?
But I'm guessing you knew that, and are asking why someone would have the nav lights on during the day? Exactly. I realize that it's not common in pistons, but it's sop on many turbine airplanes. Nav lights on = plane is powered up. Beacon on = airplane is about to start engines or engine...

The problem is that you can't stand up if you value your career. Blacklisting runs rampant and companies get genuinely scared of whistleblowers coming into their organizations even if they have nothing to hide. It's exactly the opposite scenario that it should be in a perfect world... think about i...

Turned onto final for 31 at Bella Bella one summer day in a Goose. There seemed to be more seagulls than I've ever seen before flying over the dump. There were like thousands. As I got closer I realized that they were actually thousands of pages of newspaper. :? I flew through them, almost reading t...

There sure are a lot of people on here ready to slag a pilot BEFORE ANYONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED. I'm willing to bet there are few besides the pilot who actually k...

Re: TO THE PEOPLE WHO THINK AIRLINES ARE NOT THE BEST JOB
Ten years in the bush. I'm in 705 now and I did it for lifestyle and safety. I still fly a Turbo Beaver now and then for a local company. I'm a baby at riding the autopilot but so far I'm enjoying it. I think the guys at the old Macmillan Bloedel flight department had it best: Goose, Beech 350, Falc...

My dad saw floating spots and it ended up being a detached retina requiring surgery. I think I would consult an optometrist rather than trust my fellow Avcanadians to diagnose my medical problems. Good luck.

A world of difference.
In the past three years I've progressed through air taxi to commuter and finally airline operations. The difference is stark. From training to workload to duty time to equipment. I realize that to implement much of the 705 rules on 703 would render it impractical. However things like duty time seem ...

Re: Approach Ban
It's not a loophole but I've noticed that unless there are RVRs, They usually err on the low side with ground reported visibilities. Some places it's really bad. I've been in YBL calling 3/4 mile vis and had the airport at three miles.

Re: Approach Ban
No one will say anything if you bust the ban on the radio. There may not be any action at all depending on who's watching. I came out of the bush so making decisions about grey areas was a part of going to work. When I came over to IFR it was refreshing to have everything so black and white. But the...
