Re: Island Air Flight School - YTZ

did mine there. No complaints, would recommend, but as with any training place, finding the correct instructor for you is the key. perceived cost increase can be offset if you are local and don't have to pay to travel to the school. A good instructor will maximize the use of the time flying to and f...

Re: LASIK anyone?

I went to Crystal Clear vision in Yorkville Toronto, few reasons i picked them over Lasik MD 1) my optometrist knew the surgeon personally, they'd been in university together 2) they didn't even attempt a "bait and switch" with the price, a lot of places advertise "from $300 per eye" but that's the ...

Re: LASIK anyone?

Had it done two years ago. Went for the all singing , all dancing all laser wavefront doo-hickey Cost just shy of 5k, worth every penny. could see 20/20 as soon as I sat up after the surgery. Vision stabilised at 20/20 within a week no side effects, the laser procedure itself took approx 30 seconds ...

Re: concerta/ ADHD/depression

Funny , my experience was the exact opposite. I phoned medical branch in Toronto to self report as unfit. I got a letter suspending my medical, they asked for a report from my family doctor documenting Background o Start date o Symptoms o Treatment o Compliance · Medication history o Side effects · ...

Re: ADB question

Just as an update, decided I couldn't be arsed to do anything (I'm not flying much at moment anyways), so resigned myself to carrying two booklets.
Yesterday , completely unsolicited, a new medical sticker arrived in the mail.

Problem solved it would seem

Re: ADB question

Thanks for the input.
I'm mildly curious as to what triggered the printing of a new ADB.
I'd assumed the new medical as that is the only thing that has changed but if that was the case surely the new one would appear in the new ADB.
My old ADB has 2 years left on it

ADB question

I just renewed my medical (first ever renewal) all went well CAME happily signed off in my booklet about a week later an envelope from Transport Canada arrived inside a shiny new ADB. I thought this was a bit weird, as far as I was aware , you don't even get a new medical sticker on renewal anymore....

Re: Ppl flight test oral exam

Be able to describe why you made certain decisions. "because my instructor told me to" isn't the correct answer. be able to explain why you picked that speed, altitude, route etc. it is your thought processes your examiner is interested in. mine asked me if i would actually attempt the flight he'd h...

Re: Taking PSTAR at 4900 Yonge Street

Are you sure you don't have that the wrong way round

You should be sitting the pstar at island air. And the ppl exam at yonge street.

I trained there so know for a fact that you can sit the pstar at the school

Re: PPL written exam

In my opinion, it isn't the knowledge that's the problem. I was probably ready, knowledge-wise a good six months before I actually sat my exam. it was getting used to the convoluted logic and wording of the questions that was an issue for me. Even now I have vague recollections of being convinced th...

Re: PPL written exam

someone actually posted a reasonable guide to answering transport Canada exams on here a while ago. I'm paraphrasing and my apologies to the original poster but I can't find their actual response, but it basically went like this multiple choice, process of elimination 1 answer will be blatantly wron...

talk to the maintenance guys, they are usually only too happy to show you what they've done.
Often they are delighted that someone is taking an interest in their work.

Re: Effective passenger safety review

the handles on the 172s that I fly are positioned exactly underneath where your hands (and fingers) would rest naturally.
all it takes is one bump and the passenger to "clutch on" to something and they've potentially pulled the handle up.

Re: Effective passenger safety review

as photofly says the flight test standards require "perform an effective passenger safety review;" I'd go as far as to say that Examiners are pretty liberal with the definition of this. I recall doing the "harness , doors windows" part of my pre landing checks on my flight test. I don't recall doing...

the app I mentioned lets you select from which ever topic areas you want air regs, met, weight and balance, flight instruments, theory of flight and so on. You can select flashcard or study mode and tell it how many questions you want. I found it very useful. I have no affiliation with them but it w...
