Thought I might as well pop in with an update. I graduated from the generic vfr course today and will be reporting to Whitehorse for on the job training before Christmas.

Re: Has anyone ever successfully got offered training "quick
The assessment session was the green light that took the longest for me. Be patient... Or try at least, I remember waiting for mine. The trainers here in YEG are great, they aren't kidding when they talk about the amount of work though. Be prepared to ignore everything and everyone else in your life...

I applied June 2012 and am on course as of September 2013 in YEG. I was also standby for the march 2013 course. Any update on your progress?

They also ask you about Nav Canada, too see what you know about the company. Most of the questions are just what you are expecting. Spend time thinking back on past work experience. Make sure you have your dates all figured out. They want specifics so know as many details as you can, but don't go on...

Congrats treehugger! One thing I remember from my interviews was that they expect you to know quite a bit about the company. They also ask a lot of questions about scenarios ( have you ever overcome ... Etc) and want you to provide examples from your past work experience.

Re: Nav Canada Infographic on Employment and Training Trends
Hey Dutchpilotguy, I am curious why you think the third applicant didn't make it. I agree that with classes that small pass rates should be pretty high. So what was it that caused this person to fail? I ask out of curiosity and because I will be starting my training on Monday and will take what ever...

Well I am 281 hours from the start of my training. Getting pretty excited for it. I move up to YEG this Friday. That will give me a week to settle in and review the ITA material once more. Wish me luck!

Re: Study Materials
They supply the study material for the w-sim. Other than that you could try doing online aptitude tests, maybe.. I guess. A lot of the testing is designed to find out what you know, not what you studied. I can say that having done the testing last year that at least half of the tests there is nothin...

Thanks Hydro. That makes for a very large change in living arrangements, quality of life, upon retiring. Important than to make sure you are topping up those rrsp's then.

Re: changes to ATC pension plan for new hires
If I may ask, what would this new pension look like for the average vfr controller after 30 years? I know there are variables but if you averaged everything out, what kind of pension are we talking about?

I got to see it today. What a beauty! I didn't take pictures as the volunteers were hard at work polishing the fuselage. It was our first time to the museum and both of my boys and I had a great time. Can't wait to go again!

Re: Curious about being a VFR!
Thanks for all the great responses so far! Truly, there are a lot of helpful people here. With my training now just over two months away I can't help but look forward to it, and beyond it. I am curious what are ATC tower schedules like in the Edmonton FIR? What is the rotation from days to evenings ...

Call your recruiter! I was on the phone with Joanne this week and she has been super helpful. I am on the next VFR course starting in September, who knows there may be room left. You can always apply for IFR internally.

Tango, thank you for your reply. I believe that I will take advantage of your offer to exchange pm's. Are there...

I thought I would just pop in on this dusty old thread to say that I have been placed on course. I will be starting my VFR training in YEG this September. I was wait listed for the spring course and didn't get the call but I have been patiently waiting and was excited to receive my call yesterday. A...
