Re: Ottawa Area Flying School
The First 3 schools mentioned are reputable and have been around a long time, pick whichever one suits your needs and personality best. Be careful with some of the others. There are some shady operators out there. I believe if you dig deeper you will find Phoenix has ties to the banished Aero Academ...

Try Mike Jones and his Grob at Diamond in YXU if that's not too far for you.

Re: Questions concerning a career in ATC
Be smart and go VFR first. Easier/shorter training (get paid sooner), and a much higher checkout rate. That way you're in the company and have job security. Then you can choose to go IFR and if you don't make it will get sent back vfr. It sucks to train for 2 years and be streeted when you get cease...

Re: TSB: Pilots Need More Training (KFC Incident July '08)
727 landed long on runway 06 (6000ft) and bounced. Opted to go around but crew forgot the spoilers. End of runway came up fast and rotation was steep (premature for speed?)to clear the end. Dragged the tail through the grass for quite a distance. Was ugly to watch but luckily a happy ending.

Pilot Philosophy
Pilot Philosophy The difference between a duck and a co-pilot? The duck can fly. A check ride ought to be like a skirt. Short enough to be interesting, but long enough to cover everything. Speed is life. Altitude is life insurance. It only takes two things to fly: Airspeed, and money. The three most...

Re: PC-12 Type Rating
if you are flying privatly only, you do not need to do simulator training, you only have to complete a ppc (flight test) Not necessarily true. Most insurance companies will require some Sim training. I had done all my training in the A/C and had nearly 100hrs PIC on type when the insurance company ...

Re: Category 1 medical for ATC
I maintain my cat 1 every year (under 30) and navcan pays for it.So if you're under 40 and have a Class 1 Nav Canada will only pay for one medical every two years, because it's valid for two years for ATC.

Re: ATC job stability
I don't think a job gets much more stable. It's very rare for a tower or fic to close, if they do there are plenty of others understaffed to transfer to. I have never heard of anyboy being laid off. You may not always be able to choose where you want to go but you will always have somewhere to go.

I'd like to see someone with a CPL or ATP without a night rating.

Flight test fees
Just wondering what the going rate is for flight test examiners in your neck of the woods.
I've heard anything from $250 to $350 plus expenses here in Southern Ontario.
