Re: Air Canada vs WestJet
Are you flying less days at WJ than AC? That depends. I usually work 11 days if I get my NAS turns, some are down to 9. Others 16 regularly - depends on base and time of year, single days vs multi day pairings. I'd say my average over the last decade is 13 days a month. Training inside the block he...

Re: Air Canada vs WestJet
Without wadding into the mud I'll throw my personal experience at WJ. Been here 16+ years. Since having kids (12 years ago) I've worked 1 Christmas. The pay until recently left a serious sour taste in your mouth. That's fixed, massive improvement!!!! For the moment WJ pays top dollar, AC will pass t...

Re: New payscale
I'm happy with this TA. We had a LOT of house cleaning to do, and we got it done. Sure the pay scales by themselves aren't a grand slam, but they're solid. The lifestyle tweaks appear very good. Our vacation credit is among industry leading and we get 3 GDOS with each group of 5 days days off. We ca...

Re: Arctic King Air captain, 1200 TT, 100 MPIC
At 1200 hours you don't even know what you don't know yet. There's no getting around it, you don't know shit at 1200 hours, and have NO business flying PIC in that environment with that experience level unless every hour you spent since getting your license was flying that plane, on those routes wit...

Re: Pilot shortage …? Reality or fake news ..
With early retirements, less students, and covid - we may not be in a "shortage" but the days of kicking over a rock and 3 ATPL pilots with type ratings scurrying out are over.
It's a pretty good time to be a pilot right now, we'll see if we actually capitalize on it

Re: Tips and tricks thread
When I first started out as a rampy at wasaya a c208 pilot who had thousands of hours on floats told me somthing that stuck with me - if you're running out of runway (or water) and just get airborne, point at the tree tops, "I'd rather see you clear those trees at 10 feet and a 100 kts rather then 1...

Re: Asymmetric Reverse Leads to King Air Excursion
Bob, I'm not a self proclaimed expert in anything, especially somthing I haven't touched since 2006. That said there's no reason why you can't use reserve thrust on gravel, none. I never said it's required, I said you can. I've have taken king airs into short, Iced up runways (2400" being the shorte...

Tips and tricks thread
Hello all, been awhile. Every so often a thread is started with tips to help keep you safe, get the job easier. Every plane is unique, so are the areas we fly. I'm just getting this started, and will add to it later tonight (have board games to play with my son). So please, those of you who've got s...

Re: Asymmetric Reverse Leads to King Air Excursion
There’s like… zero reason to use reverse on a Beech product. Especially in Red Deer. That's a completely inaccurate statement. I agree tho. I never used reverse on a landing and I have 2000 hrs of King Air all around Nunavut on small gravel runway. You simply don’t touch reverse on gravel, even les...

Re: A Career in Aviation or Law Enforcement?
I'm really surprised no ones mentioned Fire fighting. 7 24 hour shifts a month, and every fire fighter I know has a side hussle and lives better then I do lol. Besides, everyone's happy to see a fireman (person), not so much a cop 😀 That's easier said than done. Decent jobs with low barriers to ent...

Re: A Career in Aviation or Law Enforcement?
I'm the son of a 43 year veteran of the RCMP. My dad basically forbid me from joining the force. I'm really surprised no ones mentioned Fire fighting. 7 24 hour shifts a month, and every fire fighter I know has a side hussle and lives better then I do lol. If you live in a van, you have lost the game of life! You can’t spin it into a positive. To be fair, if you have wanderlust, desire to travel a lot and dont care about a fixed address and are happy...who says you've lost? Now living in an abandoned van on blocks, now that's failing life. Then again...

4 bladed King Airs have a modified definition of VMC - dead engine feathered, not windmilling. I assume the same for other types with 4 blades.

Re: Traning bond or ... non flying job
Take the job if its one you see yourself doing for a year or so. you're not going to get called back soon anyway, and companies resume piles will just keep getting bigger with higher time pilots. As for training bonds, if an employer tries to sneak one in on you during recurrent ask for an education...

Re: Travel starting to come back?
Not much to see here. Sunwing is selling packages until there’s enough demand to fire up their own planes. This was the plan from the beginning. I can guarantee the full AC flights weren’t full of WG pax. And thank you to AC for flying peeps down to our hotels. Get some revenue going. WG is still t...
