Re: Format for presenting PGI's

It's true that "milking" is a real problem with some unscrupulous instructors. It's hideously unethical, but actually not illegal, to intentionally hold back your students. Again, efficiency is one of those things that no one really cares much about. A "milking" instructor has merely realized how i...

Re: Don't Turn On The AutoPilot

Throw a little excitement in the flight Good idea. I know its an attitude we want all our company pilots to have :smt040 And I am sure if those two young guys with this attitude had not killed themselves in the CRJ a few years back, they would wholeheartedly agree with you. Or the pilots who came h...

"primer, master, mags on both, fuses , carb heat, mixture rich, fuel selector on both, gauges green"..... You take the fuses out of the fuse holders and examine them? Edited due to lack of coffee over the last couple days. Very poor choice of words. What I meant to say..... CB's , not fuses

Re: Don't Turn On The AutoPilot

If it's in the panel, learn about it, and use it, to help you, especially when you are alone in the cockpit. I completely agree with the statement, but only under a general sense. At this time, I think it's reasonable to assume that a lot of pilots that don't fly the big tin shutter at the idea of ...

Re: Format for presenting PGI's

Death by briefing it should also be noted is how many new instructors start out when first developing their PGIs I find. Its rare to have a new instructor student not do enough, but rather most go way overboard if left to their own devices. Some will revert to this tendancy when they get into the a...

A few years ago, I did not hold a medical at the time but my vision was blurry when I was fatigued. I don't know if there was an illness or it was just because I was really tired. I was thinking I was going to need some glasses but it went away. When I renewed my cat 3, it was acceptable and he loo...

Re: Ex: 22

I think this exercise is completely "roboticised". The instructor is so focused on completing all the items that would make the TC examiner "happy" and completely drowns a student in all of the "nice to know" details. Even worse, instructors make it a very step by step(checklist) kind of exercise. I...

Re: Format for presenting PGI's

Very interesting topic....As a Class 4 myself, I've literally just finished going through the paces and can comment on the matter since it's fresh in my head. I've had class 1's on both sides of the spectrum. 1 guy was noticeably younger than the 2nd, but the younger guy made sure no stone was left ...

Re: Night Medevacs

You're right, I appreciate it when medical staff leave the flying to me and don't try to get involved. However, let me ask you this: would it be unfair to ask a nurse if the trip could wait until morning? +1....I completely agree with that option. But the problem is the certain degree of separation...

Re: Night Medevacs

But fearing we are going too far off topic everyone, my point I wanted to make is very clear. Pilots are pilots.....and the medical professionals are the doctors, nurses, etc etc. We simply do not mix the 2. The fact of the matter is that a patient needs to move, whether the hospital needs the bed f...

Re: Night Medevacs

Seems like a good idea. But....how far past minimum should I go for a heart attack? How high above them should I stay for a drunk with a broken arm? And if the nurse says his tummy hurts, how do we know whether to stay in bed or not? Medevacs will never be a slick, glamerous kind of flying. Its pro...

Re: Night Medevacs

teh1pilot. I must ask you one question. One question only. Haven't you, as a dispatcher every wondered why you have to call out the same crew three times late at night, and never during the day? I remember well the simple FACT that as soon as the last skeds were headed south, the phones would start...

Re: Running out of fuel

Personally, I don't completely dismiss the idea of using the fuel gauge. Just... almost completely? I should have chosen my words better. I don't use the fuel gauge as a primary indicator of fuel remaining....Ever. If the information at my disposal just doesn't add up, well I need to fix it.

Re: Night Medevacs

As one who has knowledge about how both sides operate(being a medevac dispatcher myself as well as a commercial pilot) I can see things from both sides of the story. On one side, I can see how fatigue can weigh very heavily on flight crews. We as dispatchers understand the fact. We will most definit...

Re: Running out of fuel

I'd like to mention that personally, I've always thought the fuel gauge conversation was brought about from some instructor at a FTU.....a "FTUism" as it has been called in the past here. Really, think about it. A fuel gauge is in a plane for a reason...if the needle just arbitrarily moved around fo...

The theory is that it will act as an alternate for air ambulance flights and other smaller aircraft, but not anything of size...they will still have to use Calgary as an alternate. Project was being spearheaded by Minister Horner, believe paid for through AHS. Tom From what i've understood from ram...

Re: True or False?

Not a problem. I personally want the CORRECT! information to get passed along from a first hand account, instead of the bureaucrats sitting at city hall, and media personnel who are essentially playing a big game of telephone. As a local pilot/instructor and an Edmonton resident, I think the CYXD sh...
