Re: Lake of the Woods Fatal Accident
'There will be no new causes of aircraft accidents' How long ago was that written? Not to jump to conclusions but unfortunately I think you can read the limited information and come to a conclusion as to one of the contributing factors as to the cause of this one. RIP to whomever was involved. https...

Re: Missing plane Wawa
I consider a Spot tracker with a valid subscription to be absolutely required for any flights I fly above anything else. As a minimum, if anything happens whether it's mechanical, weather or whatever, at least someone will find me or the smoking hole quickly and eliminate all the countless hours of ...

Re: Seaplane down with seven on board.
"Where am I landing and where is my landing gear". Every flight, no matter what airplane I'm flying. 3 times. Downwind, base and final. Actually look and think about what you are saying. Easy to say the words and have it totally backwards. Also 'Positive rate - Gear up. Every flight, every time, eve...

Re: Another Youtuber Crashes
Yup he crashed again. https://youtu.be/e7Pzakaeb1w Says his girlfriend was NOT flying at the time and this time there is no video is this crash. Guess the insurance company would not want to see that given he's not an instructor. Video before this showed him teaching his girlfriend how to land the p...

Re: Another Youtuber Crashes
I agree with you 100% and I am all for homebuilts and LSAs as a way to get more people into aviation. Looking back on this past year I can count on my one hand the number of on-airport landings I made this year. My point is that if you're going to fly an airplane you owe it to yourself and your pass...

Re: Another Youtuber Crashes
The 'risk of a non certified aircraft' can certainly be mitigated by proper adherence to the manufacturer's specifications, guidelines and AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES. This AD was published some time before the crash and if I'm not mistaken at least a year before this incident. Someone would have had t...

Re: Another Youtuber Crashes
I just watched the follow up video. "Oh and there was an AD on that fuel pump. Whatever that is......" He was referring to an AD and not the fuel pump is but to be owning and working on your own airplane and not knowing what AD stands for peaks volumes I think. And then he also mentions that he shou...

Re: Another Youtuber Crashes
Old news. That was awhile ago. I believe there's a follow up video. I think he did attribute it to vapour lock. Shut down, sit, start up and take off immediately and without having installed a return line from the carbs. He was a classic example of why Rotax recommeds you install a return line. He w...

Re: Dr. Lower Passed Away - Thunder Bay
60 years is a long time to provide a service for anything. I started going to him after Dr. Macintosh hung up his stethoscope. I'm sure some of the members here will remember him as well. I chased Dr Lower from his house, to The Brown Street station in Westfort to Kakabeka. A real class act and he w...

Re: Hard Floatplane Landing
This is one of the things that can give an amateur built airplane a bad name very quickly. Builder installed a larger engine against the kit manufacturer's recommendations and also did not strengthen the firewall or beef up the engine mounts. Add to that the airbag (Full Lotus it looks like) flat bo...

Re: African Self Fly Safari
No Impalas but at Buffalo Range Airport in Zimbabwe we did have to wait for the airport operator to chase some Zebra and Wildebeest off the runway. I wondered why our guide's plane had an air horn on it and after this it made sense. Seems the critters don't necessarily respond to just a low level bu...

Re: African Self Fly Safari
My wife travelled with me as well. Prior to departure she was a little iffy on some parts of the itinerary especially the 4x4 safari in Botswana sleeping on top of the jeeps but once we got into it she was pleasantly surprised. She is already asking when we are going back to do a different or even t...

Re: African Self Fly Safari
The guides carry some spares, battery booster packs and some limited other rescue parts with them but thankfully on our trip no support was needed. Having the guides who were familiar with the area and the local facilities was reassuring and in the event of any problems. They did have other support ...

Re: African Self Fly Safari
Not sure where you got your number from but if you factor in 3 weeks accommodation, meals, beverages, game drives (some days twice per day), vehicle rentals and beer (we drank a LOT of beer) it works out to be fairly reasonable. The rates online for some of places we stayed at were published at over...

Re: African Self Fly Safari
Well I just got back from African Self Fly Safari and I can't say enough good things about it! The flying, the scenery, the people, the wild game and did I mention the flying? Our tour took us from South Africa to Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Foreign license validation was a breeze with most o...

African Self Fly Safari
Anybody ever done one of these? http://aerosafari.com/ Seems like a great way to see some of the country and save on some of the long overland or commercial carrier trips between parks or towns. They seem to keep to the more stable parts of the area. South African licence validation looks simple eno...

Re: Plane with 2 aboard missing between Chilliwack and Edmonton
I read somewhere that ELTs work in a crash somewhere less than 38% of the time. We spend somewhere over $100 a year getting them tested and recertified. I spend just over $150 a year for my SPOT tracking subscription which gets tested every time i fly by sending out nice little breadcrumbs every 10 ...

Maybe this guy is related:

Go figure. This is not the first time this has happened......
Seems people don't learn from other's mistakes. Even from before the days of Youtube.

Cirrus Driver should have pulled the chute
Lucky this guy didn't get himself killed trying to handspike this Cirrus:

Not sure what the passenger was doing in there before he fell off the wing either. Tough to man the brakes or throttle when you're sitting on the wing.

Re: ADS-B
Interesting information. Would be nice to see the system in Canada in what looks like the near future. Looked at Aireon's site and could not see where they showed that they would be providing the FIS-B with their traffic information. Is the Nav Canada/Aireon satellite based system just going to be t...

ADS-B
Just looking for feedback and thoughts on installing ADS-B in my airplane. I know Canada is decades away (if ever) from having this except for in the far north but does anyone use it when flying either south of or adjacent to the border? Looking at the coverage maps and it looks like there is pretty...
