Re: Centre controllers sectors
Timmins has a transmitter for Toronto low and Montreal High. During the peak time, Montreal centre has 9 frequencies for Timmins, Moosonee, Rouyn, and a few other central Quebec locations. During the off-peak times, which varies everyday, it shares the northern and easternmost Quebec geography as on...

Re: Online Testing Results ATS
I tried the test in May 2018, 24 out of 30 questions. It’s grade school text book math, english-antonyms and synonyms, multiple choice answers. I will try again next year! I understand where I went wrong.

Just this morning, Tue Apr 10,2018, I monitored Algonquin airlink, Frosty 134 fly to Kirkland Lake Ontario, CYKX. They fly from Pearson to Kirkland Lake on occasion.

IFR- "Auto Over"
I have heard this term twice, while a controller's mic was stuck open, just before his sector was ready to split and have seen this on CBC Tv, during the visit to the Vancouver ACC, a data board strip that says "Auto over." I did a Google search and found a definition "ATC controller's radar perform...

Re: NavCanada aptitude testing, only once a year?
Here's a positive outlook, NavCanada is looking for employees who think effectively, no second guessing themselves AND, can see a mathematical resolution without calculating. Logical, assertive people.

Re: NavCanada aptitude testing, only once a year?
I attended my first session in Ottawa 2003 when SHL did the testing. That was the English, Math, Spatial Reasoning, Diagram testing and the audio cassette "letters and numbers" and the personality test. Tried the newer version about 4 years ago with the 20 questions in 8 minutes and did not succeed ...

Re: NavCanada aptitude testing, only once a year?
Both, the 8 minute online and in person session. I've taken personal steps to improve my math knowledge and keep practicing aptitude ability tests and trying to figure out where I am going wrong. I did 3 aptitude tests at my local college 10 years ago and my scores were pretty much the same on each ...

Question for the staff at Saskkatoon SK, FSS and Tower
Based on the CFS on Foreflight, it says the while the Tower is open, Saskatoon radio transfers from Radio to Tower, then FSS takes care of "The Pas/Flin Flon" RAAS sites. Then, there's a half hour period before The Pass/Flin Flon RAAS close up, and Saskatoon Radio opens when the tower closes. I'm pr...

Re: FSS 'Pre-Taxi IFR Clearance'
You're absolutely right. The only regular airlines in Timmins that know PDCs don't exist are Air Creebec, Thunder Airlines and Pulse Medevac. The other airliners, including some charters, will question FSS, why it's not allowed. Imagine if and when NavCanada launches satellite based aircraft detecti...

NavCanada aptitude testing, only once a year?
After speaking with several NavCanada employees, most of them have passed their tests, way back in the day, with one attempt and made it through all interviews and courses without a hitch. Some others have attempted a few times and finally succeeded. For those like myself who have attempted 2 tests ...

SID, STARS and waypoint names
How do new names of SIDS, STAR and waypoints come from? Recently, the North Bay CYYB1 departure was changed to the North Bay CYYB2 departure. I know the Timmins airport approach plate used to use BUDAR as one of the waypoints for the BackCourse ILS approach, when it used to exist, and now there's th...

Timmins-Moosonee sector controller, handed off an aircraft to the Wawa sector: "XXX contact Toronto on 1-3-4-2-7, take care." "OK 1-3-4-2-7, thanks" 1 minute later.. "Toronto, XXX, nobody home on 1-3-4-2-7, do you have another frequency?" -Yeah my mistake, it's actually 1-2-4-0-7 -oh ok, 1-2-4-0-7 y...

Re: Sector handoff, then consolidation
Thanks for answering that. I do listen to 133,97 which combines with 118,97 120,72 and other varied central/northern Quebec sectors. It's challenging to figure out which frequency a flight is active on when so many tiny sectors are merged into one huge airspace. Yet if I am up listening at 2:00am ET...

Sector handoff, then consolidation
From time to time, while listening to my local sector, and adjacent southern sector via LIVE ATC, and it's 7:55pm local. A given flight is handed off to either my home sector or the next sector. Then a few minutes later, the sectors consolidate. Do the IFR controllers or the supervisors decide when ...

Re: FSS 'Pre-Taxi IFR Clearance'
Atleast once a day, sometimes twice a day, Porter Jazz and Beadskin request a pre-taxi clearance. When FSS says they don't do that, the pilots get confused and ask "How do we get our clearance?" FSS says "You must have engines running and ready to taxi. However, I don't see any delays for your propo...

Re: CYQA Muskoka FSS
Timmins used to broadcast a LWIS, a year or two ago. When the last Jazz flight landed, at 12:30am local, the FSS guy switched the ATIS to the LWIS, which does not broadcast visibility or sky conditions, just wind, temp/dewpoint/altimiter. Now, just like Sudbury, the Timmins ATIS is 24/7.

CYQA Muskoka FSS
Knowing that Timmins FSS has the Muskoka RAAS, I did some research and asked current and past NavCanada stafd about the previous radio operators. Some have told me that Timmins was intended to operate like a mini FIC. Also, there used to be FSS operators at the Muskoka airport who used to rotate bet...

Re: FSS 'Pre-Taxi IFR Clearance'
I'm guessing that has to do with the lack of Radar in YTS? Exactly. The radar is just outside of CYHF (Hearst Ontario). Timmins tells the pilots, as soon as their IFR flight plan is active with Toronto Ctr., they officially activate the airway and must be airborne pronto, to not tie up the airspace.

Re: FSS 'Pre-Taxi IFR Clearance'
Many pilots at Timmins ask for PDC and are told to have engines running to request their IFR. North Bay and Sudbury offer PDC.
