Re: It's Time

Seething? Or observing? After a couple weeks of increased utilization over the peak holiday season, (or at least the last time I looked which was about a week before Christmas), with utilization peaking at summer like 8hrs 25mins, Porter has drifted back down to early Dec levels, with peak days in ...

Re: It's Time

It was fun to watch you dance around the notion that operating an aircraft that, by almost every known metric, has significantly higher operating costs (on the order of 25-45%), but 57 more seats (all filled with happy low-yield pax), is a better ploy than PD’s E2. Embraer posted a video boosting P...

Lovely numbers and yes, all of the above drivers you allude to, and plenty more, are accounted for in any granular analysis. You’ve accounted for them, have you? Once again invoking your favourite, infallible, unwavering, omniscient source of information: “trust me bro.” Forgive me for having doubt...

Re: It's Time

I think you guys should spam the living hell out of this thread with NM vs. SM comments, to drown out the incessant Realitychex drivel, and copying and pasting of FR24 utilization data. At least he stopped posting unsubstantiated dollar figures. Let's have a moment of silence for this thread ...

Re: 737 - anyone ever use the N1 and Speed buttons on the MCP panel?

Never flown the 737. What does ARM on the FMA mean? How does the A/T function when ARM is annunciated? Is this just the default when the A/T switch is in the ARM position and N1 or SPEED are not selected?

[PorterBillofSale.jpeg Here’s a nice starting point for you. What do you figure the monthly lease nut would be over a standard lease term, excluding reserves, at a 1% LRF, for an airframe with this declared valuation, with a couple million per airframe added on for working capital? Wow, you actuall...

Dredging up ancient history, and only what you think you know, from 20+ years and three airlines ago rather than formulating a compelling counter argument. Sadly, a completely predictable response. Good to know that the passage of time absolves you from any wrongdoing. “Clive made me do it!" Anyone...

Any up-to-date info on Morningstar? Specifically the B757 FO position. -Schedule? The current job ad says 12-14 days a month. Is this still mostly weekdays? -Is there a bid system in place yet? Or is one forthcoming? -Destinations? Assuming most overnights in YVR/YYC/YMX/YQM/YHZ -Any flying during d...

Re: D8 - 36 hour layovers?

The 30-36 hour "stand overs" vary in popularity. I have talked to a number of pilots about them since they were introduced, and there are a few that actually like them. The majority (based on my limited sample size of people I've spoken with) seem to find them rather unpalatable. Even more so than s...

Re: Q400 Ground School Prep?

Greetings all, Was looking for some guidance from Porter peeps who may have knowledge regarding the Q400 side of things. 2 questions (from someone with no 705 experience): 1. Are there any strategies/materials you would recommend learning or reviewing in order to be best prepared for ground school?...

Well you have your answer, OP. Apparently Porter is a pyramid scheme, and I’m going to guess Transat is probably some sort of money laundering outfit for the Rizzuto family

Choose wisely.

Re: Thunder Airlines MU2 accident in Wawa

IIRC any runway >= 3000’ is fair game at Thunder but SOP does not permit flap 40 landings in the MU2. Even though F40 would shorten your landing distance you have quite a bit more drag to contend with, and not much extra energy for late stages of the approach and flare. Even landing with flap 20 the...

Re: New hire bids

Not really preferred but trainable for the most part and lower experience which is probably the reason so they can’t immediately jump over to another airline with >1000tt. With Canada in a recession there’s not many options to move. I’ve only had 1 interview offer from a 705 operator and that’s wit...

Re: IATPL vs Modular Self-Paced

I have taught modular/self-paced and IATPL students so I'll weigh in a bit. First off, there is no such thing as a "frozen ATPL" in Canada, you either have an ATPL, or you don't. The integrated program allows you to write the ATPL exams with less experience than what you would normally require (200i...

Re: The iATPL programme in Brampton and Jazz Approach

I believe the majority of you have an ultimate goal of getting into an airliner ASAP. Did some research on iATPL programme in Brampton Flight Center (BFM), it stated that " Successful students who have completed 250 hours of total flying, and have achieved a minimum cumulative score of 80% on the A...

Re: Air operator Certificate

The flight school is correct, what you are describing is a commercial air service, and that would require you to have a 703 OC to operate it legally. Just having a CPL and access to an airplane is not sufficient. TC takes "chisel charters" pretty seriously. I can't speak for them, but given that you...

Re: Career as a Flight Instructor

I'm about to upgrade to Class 3 which will put me at $30/hr ($5/hr higher than the Class 4 rate), which seems to be a pretty standard rate of pay for Class 3's at nearby schools (from what I've seen), plus or minus a couple dollars an hour. My pay is straight hourly, so given that I flew 400ish hou...

A bit surprised after doing some reading that the BC government isn't explicitly prohibiting flight schools from operating... Alberta laid down the law and prohibited training, and as far as I'm aware the flight schools have all followed their guidance (generally) and suspended operations except fo...

Re: Rotating winds and Tornadoes

I'll try to explain a bit of the physics (I'm not a meteorologist). As you probably already know air flows anticlockwise around a low and clockwise around a high in the northern hemisphere. The "swirling" around of the air is what's known in fluid mechanics as vorticity, which is basically a measure...

Re: Thunder Airlines

Question for ThunderCP, I remember seeing somewhere that there is a one year training agreement for new Thunder FOs (I believe that is promissory note and not a bond). Presumably there is something similar for upgrading or switching aircraft types? For example, if a new hire starts as a King Air FO ...
