Re: Any updates on training?
Part of the problem is the powers that be at HQ are looking at schedules at the bigger towers and ACCs and see a number of controllers on "spare" every day. So they think there's no staffing crisis. And until the airlines are banging at the door wanting to know why there's staffing delays they don't...

Re: Nav Canada Training After Covid
I've heard talk of a generic VFR course running in September, but nothing concrete to say it will be.ProfessionalATC wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 10:15 am With this in mind does anyone have any updates as to whether or not Nav Canada will start training soon ?

Re: Tower closure predictions?
I agree, those with lay-off letters need those letters torn up by the company, yesterday. It's crazy that they're still looking to lay off licenced controllers. If they don't start training both ab-initios and bids to other units soon, they're going to be so short staffed it's unfathomable. The comp...

Re: Tower closure predictions?
So, with the latest info from the Union, stating they're pushing Nav Canada to staff Towers to an adequate level before those that are there burn out, does anyone actually think training will recommence anytime soon(ish)?

Re: Tower closure predictions?
Fantastic news. Really, none of the control towers or FSS stations should have been put up for an LOS during these times.
I'm glad to hear that, certainly for now, they will remain open. That must be a huge relief for all the staff involved.

Re: IFR: Balance Unchanged
To add to what the other replies have stated with an example. Say someone on the ground is given an IFR Clearance out of CYQF departing Runway 35 for CYVR. Upon getting release from the IFR controller the Tower controller is given the amendment, "turn left heading 270". The Tower controller would th...

Re: Nav Canada Training After Covid
I'm hoping that things will be resolved before those controllers served notice will actually be laid off.
But I agree, they and anybody at the units that could close due to the LOS would definitely be front of the line back in before new hirerees.

Re: Nav Canada Training After Covid
There's a Terminal course starting in Vancouver in April, and a handful of trainees that haven't been axed at various other units still going. As for Generic IFR/VFR courses or complex tower courses, I would be surprised if anything happens again in 2021. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see anythi...

Re: ATC Layoffs?
While 900 employees have been laid off, including some union members, with other staff having to job-share just to stay employed and taking pay cuts and having their pensions changed on them, CATCA employees received a 3% pay increase last year (should have been July as per the CA but was initially...

Re: Should VFR traffic near control zones contact ATC?
The bare legal minimum in Class C/D airspace is for the Tower controller to pass traffic information to potentially conflicting VFR aircraft. I will provide conflict resolution, even if not explicitly requested, such as "remain south of Rwy XX arrival path" or "not below 2'000 ft"

Re: Should VFR traffic near control zones contact ATC?
Common sense is to give some space, no need to “shave” zones if there is no intent to go there. But yet legal, makes others nervous not knowing the intentions (if any) That's the key (my bolding of Loner's comment). If I don't know what their intentions are it makes keeping my known traffic safe fr...

Re: Should VFR traffic near control zones contact ATC?
As a tower controller, if you're going to be flying near the zone laterally or vertically, I would prefer a "heads up" call from you. The number of times I've seen someone flying around 0.25 miles from the zone or overflying 200' above the zone without establishing communication when I've had confli...

Re: Legal Hangar Battle at CYZU Whitecourt Alberta (previously titled "Things are getting ugly at CYZU") gofundme reque
A similar "battle" happened in Oshawa with the local City taking a hangar owner to court over an addition he built. The court ruled the City had no jurisdiction over the property because it was under Federal rule, being part of an aerodrome.

Re: YYZ 2 hr arrival delays due wind
It could only be left just a little bit maybe where Courtneypark is. Arrivals on that runway (call it 33L) would probably have to cross 33C as there would be no room for a taxiway in between. It would probably be about the same distance as between 06L & R at 1000 feet between centrelines. It could ...

Re: YYZ 2 hr arrival delays due wind
I understand the need and desire for 05R/23L to be built, but (ignoring the practicalities of current buildings in the way, land ownership rights) would constructing a 32/14 (33L a bit more) runway help with the arrival rate on the 33s?

Re: IFR and VFR ATC's - tell me what you like and don't like about it!
I'm VFR and love it. I was originally streamed IFR but was then offered a VFR course and snapped it up. Personally I always wanted VFR, but would have taken whatever Nav Canada offered me. I love being at an actual airport. Seeing the planes out the window and smelling the kerosene! As others have a...

Re: YYZ Assessments Dec 11-13, 2017
I went through the YYZ assessment centre a few years ago and had a similar experience to what Cossack describes from his time in the UK. Some of the sets deliberately have more questions than can be answered in the given time. It does make you think under pressure and prioritize what needs to be ans...

Re: IFR VFR FSS streams
Although not impossible, it is a much harder transition from a FSS placement to a VFR or IFR one. I don't have the stats to hand, but I would say that it is generally the exception rather than a common norm. The many FSS's I've spoken to have all said they love their role, and for many, the opportun...
