Re: Medical

Yeah, I could go for a CAT1 but as ATC I’d need to go every year (i think) so I have a 2 for ATC and 3 for PPL. I’m under 40 so I go every 24 months. I don't think you actually would. Read 404.04 carefully. The validity period of "a medical certificate" is spelled out in the Table (ATC 24 months). ...

Re: Coast to Coast Flight - Aerodrome recommendations

Wow, this is some great stuff. Lots to research.

Yes, 100ll.ca is a go to, but it seems like the further I look east, the longer it is between price updates. Not everyone seems to be as on top of giving you updated prices it as I am Rob ;)

Re: Coast to Coast Flight - Aerodrome recommendations

Awesome. I forgot to mention that departure is the first good weather window for the Rockies in June. First stop is Golden for a rest and then my wife wants two nights in Drumheller to do the dino thing. Going to try and stagger the overnight stops on the way back (MB east bound, SK west bound) whic...

Coast to Coast Flight - Aerodrome recommendations

Hi all, In a potential act of ludicracy, my wife has agreed to load up the infant and camping gear into the Cherokee and head from Squamish to Halifax, VFR. Planning about 5-6 flying days to get there, and the same coming back. I am seeking any hot tips on good welcoming strips to stop at for overni...

One way of doing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7oHNugM4GA Coincidental that you would choose this video. Rory now owns the Cessna 180 MIA that appears in the rapper's Instagram video. Don't know for sure if he was the pilot. Interestingly, in September I met the deceased at the field and shot...

Thanks for all the feedback. I did look at the logs but did not think to check for SBs/ADs. The seller said he has not had the tanks out of it in the 10+ years that he owned it. The plane has been in Quebec for as far back as I can tell. About 10,000 on the airframe, but roughly 100 on the prop and...

I have my life insurance through industrial alliance. You have to answer risk based questions on flying habits.

Your current insurer will probably remove the exclusion for you, you will just have to pay more.

Re: Be careful what you report finding on the walkaround

I thought I read somewhere that the issue is that the new 172 have MELs that include strobes. I have never seen the manual of a new 172, so I am just farting out speculation here. So on an old 172, strobes out, fill your boots because they aren't required for Day VFR in Canada (we had a Cherokee 140...

Re: Do you readback VFR clearances?

I read back VFR although I know I don't need to. It is force of habit due to my side hustle in marine rescue where closed loop communication is mandatory, so it is a habit I want to keep. However, if it is really busy, or I am feeling a bit behind but I know I understood the clearance/direction, I'l...

Re: Bose QC25 ANC headset

Don't know about the 35, but on the Q25 the mic piece clicks into the 3.5 mm jack quiet firmly and the box is shaped so it doesn't rotate back and for as it fits tight against the bottom of the headphone shell

Re: How are People Filing IFR Flight Plans?

I really like CFPS, but there is one dumb thing. The master flight plan list I made of 10 or so flights I often fly populates Navcanada's computer with 10 master flight plans. Multiply that by the half dozen pilots at out company using it and when someone phones in a flight plan the FIC or ACC has ...

Re: Daily Rate For A Small Turbo-Prop

Just lots of free time between flying days. So basically, when on standby for a call out can still get on with my life.... If you've never worked standby, you may be surprised how much the state of being on standby tends to mess with your personal program. A lot of people end up wasting standby day...

Re: Does NavCanada threaten us with higher user fees?

I certainly don't want to advocate for higher user fees, but for our annual subscription cost I feel I get pretty high value for dollar given the complicated system, amount of technology and maintenance, and the number of people that need to get paid at NavCanada. Especially service in the FIC. Othe...

Nanaimo radio is the RCO and an Canada will bill you for the use of the airport. Haven't operated out of there in about 3 years now... They actually switched it to Port Hardy Radio for this summer, but I just looked at today's CFS release and it it is back to Nanaimo. Interesting. Edit: By NOTAM, i...

By the way the underwriters’ prices are pretty much what they are. There aren’t many underwriters operating in the Canadian market. Competition between different brokers is based on commission and service, and margins are pretty slim. Exactly. The insurance industry is huge, but there are actually ...

Re: Who is the broker representing

You aren't buying a COPA Policy. Magnes is a broker selling you an AIG policy (the underwriter). In theory, a broker works for you by finding you the best deal from an underwriter. In this case, the broker is selling you a set deal from an underwriter. COPA has already negotiated a deal for the poli...

I wouldn't worry about it. If you are done in 60 hours it isn't exactly alarm bells that you are being milked and when you solo is not really relevant if you are still working through the syllabus. I think I soloed in 12 hours, but was still at 55 or so when finishing off the flight test. Worked har...

I find lakes are one of the most easily identified features because each one can be quite unique. That said, I have almost all of my flying in BC mountains so I can see how terribly easy it is to get lost once east of the Rockies and things flatten out. As a brand new pilot, the first time I flew ou...

Re: Proper fuel mixture adjustments in long climbs/descents...?

After take off I note where the EGT's are during the first 1000 feet of climb. I just adjust the mixture whenever that EGT has dropped (getting richer) back to where it was on take-off. Still plenty rich, but I am maintaining approximately the same mixture as max power take-off.
