Re: What is salary upon completion of training?

There are quite a few more variables that go into the unit classification than just busy. Complexity I'm fairly sure is ranked higher than how busy it is. It's a weirdly complicated algorithm.

Re: Maximum of 3 aircraft permitted in Vancouver-area airports!

What i’ve heard more than once, from different sources, is on nice days controllers call in sick and head to the beach. Hence, short staffed. One or two people sick here or there doesn't make a unit short. It's when you are 6-10 people short every day and no one has called in sick. There's just no ...

Re: Maximum of 3 aircraft permitted in Vancouver-area Circuits!

I routinely see 6+ in the circuit at ZBB and also YXX, so the 3 max doesn't really hold much water. Maybe it's different at YPK and YNJ.

Re: OT at Nav Canada

What is meant by saying your unit is short? Not enough people to cover each sector? A normal days staffing would be 18-21 people for instance but we often only have 14-16 or less, the rest is covered by overtime but it's all voluntary. When there isn't enough people even with overtime which is also...

Our unit is often 3-6 bodies short pretty much every day. OT has never been mandatory.

If I gave you direct sandheads and on course, I would expect that you would turn onto your own course towards destination after Sandheads. If I wanted you to continue to Sandheads, then Flounder before proceeding on your own course I wouldn't say anything at all. Did one of the grumps make a comment...

I don't recall seeing YMX or YUL on the list of Federal airports. What decade is it again?

VFR overshoots don't get a Cadors, IFR ones will though if it's not due to weather.

VFR is a great way to go and get your foot in the door and then move up from there. Its FAR easier to both train for and qualify than any of the IFR units.

Re: "Unrestricted Visual" vs "Visual"

YVR used to have published visuals way back when they had LAHSO's onto 12. Now you'd commonly get something like "not below 2000 until final" for the VFR aircraft underneath and a speed restriction so that you don't slow down too much too soon.

None of the planes on gates are being stored except for the 2 Sunwing 737's and while there are some that still do, very few are parked for more than a few hours before heading back out.

There are going to be some seriously short units before any help arrives. The short-sightedness is over the top.

Re: Pop-Up IFR

In Canada, I have heard of pilots being asked if they wished to declare an emergency due to an inability to maintain VFR, and on being told “negative”, being instructed to file an IFR flight plan by radio with FSS, which upon being propagated to the ATC unit in question would result in a clearance ...

Re: Pop-Up IFR

When a VFR pilot is asking for an IFR clearance, it usually means that they are about to enter cloud or in worsening conditions. You do your best to get them one asap which usually means near instantly depending on traffic and location of course. Once you have your clearance, then ATC would ask you ...
