Re: "puppy mill" instructors
Changing the rules in Canada will have no positive effect A valid point. What is needed is a changed in customer (student) demand for service. Prospective student pilots need to be informed that they will be much better off if they demand training with more breadth, and from instructors of varied a...

Re: Would you do it if you could start over?
I'm starting to draw these conclusions as well. I believe I'll still get my CPL and do a float course (maybe only 15 hr for now.) This will make me a safer, better pilot. And I do believe I'd get a discount on insurance as a private owner with a CPL. Is this true?

Re: flying
I was listening to a live recording of Rush playing "Working Man" (or it might have been "What you're Doing") as I approached the airport in a single Otter on amphibs straight into a blood-red sunset. There was no wind whatsoever and the air was dead still. The band played their final note at the v...

Also +1 to you cdnpilot77 for taking the time to write it out when 9/10ths of AvCanada would've told him to search for himself.
Good man, Sir.
Great reality check for guys like me. Thanks!

Re: Just say NO to Aviation Degrees and Debt
If you don't take on a bit of debt, you're going to be stuck renting, which is just pissing your money in the wind. Unless of course you have a bunch of help, something that tends to be forgotten. Real estate prices never go down, interest rates are going to stay low, renting is pissing your money ...

Re: Just say NO to Aviation Degrees and Debt
Perhaps. In BC, the shortage of actual Skilled Workers, not certified Skilled Workers, has prompted the BC contruction assoc. to fast track import 600 carpenters from Ireland. The union is pissed. Nothing to say this won't continue. Nobody's going to hire someone who can't actually do the job. It's ...

Re: Just say NO to Aviation Degrees and Debt
I never went into flying without a backup or a means to pay for it, and my kids definitely won't be doing it either... or any liberal arts degree or anything that requires a great deal of specialization, lots of tuition, and has poor job prospects. Heck, specialist doctors can't find work in this c...

Re: Reason #528 to leave your flight school immediately
There is NO good reason for a PPL student to spend any time in a simulator Actually, using a sim for part of the 5 hrs hood time for a PPL is fine w/me. If nothing else, it will teach him to despise sims, which is a valuable lesson that every pilot should learn. Agreed. Exactly what happened to me.

Sorry, I'm usually on top of threads like this.. Yes, HUGE red flag. Every flight training outfit I've ever gone to is cash on the nail. I could reluctantly see, for whatever reason, having an hour or two on account, but the full 50 hour deal - no bloody way!! What happens when they go TU a week af...

Re: Float Aircraft down near Puslinch Lake, ON Oct 25 2012
Mr. Hawkins was completing a float rating. The accident flight was to be his last one prior to qualifying. If this statement is true, then Mr. Hawkins had no business carrying a passenger. If Mr. Kuijer, who as stated was an experienced flight instructor, he would have known that....... Therefore i...

Rather than start a new thread...
Is it normal to ask for $ in full up front for a 50 hour float course? I'm thinking it's a huge red flag. This is not how things work in the contracting business that I'm in. Or is this standard practice?

Re: Would you do it if you could start over?
Very interesting discussion here. Been reading the board for awhile... This thread had me finally post. 30, with 115TT about to dive head first into a 50 hour bush + complete CPL out near YVR. All I'd ever want to do for work is fly floats VFR (at this point.) No kids, girlfriend. Will be putting su...
