Re: Wasaya caravan missing
Rest in peace Nick, I hardly knew you, but what I can remember from my college days is that you were an awesome person, well liked, and well respected. To his family, take solace in knowing that he left us doing something he loved. Since graduating from the Soo in 2009, he's the second member of his...

Red Bull Air Racer Crash?
A Facebook group I'm in posted an article stating that Mike Mangold perished in his L39 shortly after departure. Cause of crash and other details unknown. Here's the link to the article http://www.vvng.com/famous-red-bull-pilot-killed-in-apple-valley-plane-crash/ Can anyone confirm or refute the cla...

Re: Help my dad and I pick a license/permit for him
As a Class 2 myself, I'm also a fan of the PPL idea, for the same reasons stated already. There's much more freedom with a PPL

Re: ever seen a UFO?
Once, heading back to CYKZ over the city of Markham. I know it wasn't a traditional UFO, but it was something reflective, small, and it spooked me for a few moments. Ended up passing a few feet (so it appeared anyways) off my right wingtip, controller didn't have anything on radar. My best guess, an...

Re: Instructor Rating Books
I used Pultz when I was going for my initial. It's chalked full of good information. When it came time to upgrade, I tried using Sharper Edge, but a friend had told me to stick with the FIG and Pultz, I did that and everything went smooth. I definitely recommend Pultz.

Re: Renew group 3 instrument rating or upgrade to group 1?
My own suggestion is to go for the group one. I know it's going to cost money. I know it's not going to come with the promise of a job. It will however make you more marketable and open a few more doors for you. In the mean time, there are some operators that probably only require a Group 3. There a...

Re: Pressure to high to fly
I was always under the impression that you just set the max for the altimeter, which I think is 31.00 inches (but I've never gone that high on the altimeter)

Re: Waiting on college application
I would not be too worried yet. I remember both colleges took their time handing out acceptance letters back when I was a student. Seneca included.
Best of luck.
Best of luck.

Re: Is ground briefing necessary
Actually sounds pretty good- but- can you describe the transition from best endurance to slow flight? Well, I can't... I only remember after best endurance induced drag decreases but parasite drag increases more rapidly, so the total drag increases and you need more power to balance out that drag. ...

Re: Is ground briefing necessary
Theory is taught in ground school. The practical part is taught and understood on the ground before flying, then demonstrated, practised and learned in the air. Can you give an example? I suppose an example of this would be Slow Flight. Theory of flight would be taught in the ground school, all tha...

Re: Is ground briefing necessary
As an instructor, I agree with everyone else on this matter. Briefings (specifically, and especially, at your stage of training) are important. PGI's even more so. Aside from it being a legal issue (as outlined by someone with that CARs reference), it gives you an idea of what to expect, and things ...

Re: Leaning mixture
You should probably keep a more steady instructor :P but as for your question, the "proper" thing to do is to lean the mixture when in cruise flight (not including the downwind portion of a circuit however... you'll learn more about that in the future). It's a good habit to get into, leaning the mix...

Re: Missing north of Peterborough
As someone who often flies between Montreal and Toronto: USE THE 401, IT'S A GIANT LIGHT CHAIN THAT POINTS TO YOUR DESTINATION. Everyone's saying that this is a wise idea, and I'm really not disagreeing, but I feel it needs the disclaimer that it wholly depends on the time you are flying at. I've b...

Re: Missing north of Peterborough
I think Cap' Crunch has it right. A number of often avoidable situations, scenarios, and factors that negatively affect a flight often result in poor, unfavourable results. I'm sure this accident is no different than any other. There may have been poor PDM, and the weather may have been unfavourable...

Re: Missing north of Peterborough
I've been told that the aircraft was GJAO, although that's unconfirmed, and I'm not about to speculate what other C150's are based at CYKZ.
