Re: Jazz or Porter?

I think its possible if you have a wife who earns a good salary as well. As the sole bread winner for my family of 3 we are still living paycheck to paycheck even after my upgrade.

Re: Regional Airline Pilot to IFR Controller, worth the switch?

Wonder what the OP ended up doing. If you're still undecided, just remember money ain't everything. Job satisfaction goes a long way in terms of happiness and health. I joined aviation during 9/11 and I had a really tough time getting my first fo job and took forever to upgrade. The pay after my fi...

Re: Living near YYZ/YTZ

. Now that I am left seat I still don't qualify for a mortgage in the GTA.t Do you mean you don’t qualify because you can’t yet put down 20%? If you look just over an hour to yyz, decent places can be had below 400,000. This being a non-rush, potential 407 commute, but they are out there. Definitel...

Re: Living near YYZ/YTZ

For me it wasn't easy. I am raising a family in the YYZ area and my wife doesnt work. How I managed to survive was by running a side business and using a line of credit when absolutely necessary. Now that I am left seat I still don't qualify for a mortgage in the GTA.

Re: Leaving a good paying secure job for aviation

I was in a similar situation. I left a high paying software engineering job for aviation 4 years ago. I still only make half as much as I did as a software engineer however I enjoy my job more. I am slated for an upgrade at a 705 in the near future which will raise my income to a level on par with e...

Re: Other Options

It's too bad that these cool flying jobs aren't available in bigger southern cities. From my experience it seems that for most pilots who want to/need to stay down south the only viable career options are airline and corporate flying and corporate tends to be unstable at times.

Re: Realistic TT for Jazz or Encore?

Therein lies part of the problem. Most of these kids don't want to go where the real money is. God forbid they should strike out on their own and leave mommy and daddy's back yard. They'd rather stay at home for half the money and then bitch about not making enough and believe it's all somebody els...

Re: Jazz or Sunwing ?

Please stop trying to justify the disgustingly low pay at Jazz. We all know how little each pilot gets trickled into their chequing account every two weeks. The amount is insulting. And reality check: not once have I heard that a pilot was willing and happy to accept their wawcon; they put up with ...

Re: Jazz or Sunwing ?

The way I see it is that a take home pay of $2000 a month is just below minimum wage in ontario. http://www.calculconversion.com/minimum-wage-ontario-calculator.html This is nothing short of criminal and if pilots are leaving Jazz just after starting, then this is a way of market forces showing the...

Re: Jazz or Sunwing ?

Take home net pay for Jazz FOs especially on reserve is around $2000 a month. There is an oversupply of FOs on reserve so we rarely get called to fly and basically make no perdiems or overtime pay. When you factor in the average cost of rent for a one bedroom condo in YYZ or YVR being $2000 a month ...

Re: Pilot shortage State side

In my previous career (software engineering) there were always recruiters messaging me for opportunities in the States. It seems they have no problem sponsoring engineers for visas as there is a shortage. Hopefully pilots get added to that list in the near future.

Re: Canada faces severe shortage of pilots and aircraft workers - Ottawa Citizen

As a regional airline first officer I was recently offered a junior engineering job in YYZ for a tech startup. The pay is 3x what I make at J*** with a better schedule. I am trying really hard to find the motivation to stay a pilot as I have over 2000 hours and 4 years invested into the industry but...
