Re: Cargojet 767 Tailstrike in Tokyo
I've heard the 3°/sec rule many times before but how do you do that? What technique is used to do this properly? I don't fly anything large enough that it needs to be flown like that but I've always been curious. The correct rotation technique is taught initially in the simulator, and reinforced in...

Re: Cargojet 767 Tailstrike in Tokyo
Yup 3 degrees per second is the magic number. It produces a nice steady rotation. In a previous life as a wide body training Capt. I would guard the yoke column (low down) as we approached 12-13 degrees, but of course as we had thoroughly discussed the slow and steady rotation it wasn’t an issue 99 ...

Re: FL430 for commercial airliners
O2 as mentioned above is the most un observed "rule" in current High level aviation, but it's not really the reason. In reality for most aircraft to be at or close to their service ceiling requires them to be so light that they are either flying empty, (IE no payload) or they have burned the vast ma...

Re: Airplane stuck in the states
“Maybe you’re impressed with your own importance but Customs isn’t.“ No Gino, I am not. I was asked my occupation, I stated my occupation. You are also incorrect regards the universal requirement to quarantine on return. Every returning Canadian is required to complete a form, the details listed on ...

Re: Airplane stuck in the states
Lots of conjecture here, so I shall post an actual experience. Last week I drove from Ontario down to the southern US, using a one way rental car. I had no issue at the border, I related exactly what I was doing, driving down to collect my personal aircraft and fly it back. When asked my profession,...

Re: Airplane stuck in the states
Interesting topic! I’m in exactly this situation, and going down to the states next week (driving) to collect my personal kit aircraft which has been there since late last year having some modifications completed. (I had planned to collect it early spring this year) While I am collecting a personal ...

Re: Sunwing is hiring seasonal pilots
Interesting range of thoughts and opinions on this thread. I admire and applaud all who are taking the time and effort to effect change in current policy, although I suspect that it is going to continue to be an uphill battle. Unfortunately individuals taking on and gaining victory over well connect...

Re: Sunwing is hiring seasonal pilots
"So Sunwing will hire some seasonal Canadian F/O's and then bring in foreign Captains making much more money" Sunwing seems to be searching for qualified typed Canadian FOs, but what about qualified Canadian Captains? Surely if they will take any endorsed, qualified Canadian FO over a temporary fore...

Re: Maintenance M license practical experience
camaero, your statement is exactly why I think this may be open to interpretation, without a doubt the regulations are in place to assure that a candidate has the relevant experience to gain the license, as of course they should be... But there seems to be some discrepancy as to exactly how that exp...

Re: Maintenance M license practical experience
Thanks for the reference section, I see the reference you mention, it is quite clear. I wonder if the rebuild of a certified (vintage) aircraft would also not be allowed under the listed criteria. I am currently employed full time as a pilot, so it is not practical to work for a facility full time t...

Maintenance M license practical experience
Quick question re the M License: If a fellow was to do the theory, and write the required exams, does the practical experience need to be done in an employed position in a shop? Or more to the point, can the experience be gained and recognized by building an aircraft? If it can be demonstrated that ...

Re: Air France Flight 447 update
well said yycflyguy, on a 10+ hour flight through the ITCZ the fuel generally does not allow the luxury of a complete deviation, sometimes the only choice is pick the most agreeable looking route and punching on through. I suspect that comments such as the one above are made by those who have never ...

Both above built by "Jim's" The Hughes racer, Jim Wright, sadly lost with the aircraft returning from Oshkosh, crashing in Yellowstone park, suspected prop failure. The QED, built by Jim Moss (I took that photo by the way) the wings are now sheeted, the engine hung and it is being painted, and will ...

48, Your right. I was referring to accidents involving the R1, R2, as I thought that was the variant he was keen on, But if it is accidents regards all the Gee Bees, well a Y was lost due fabric departing the wing, the QED in a river on take off due a rag in the intake, the Z as you say due flutter,...

Re: Gee Bee Racer
A flying Gee Bee, really? I thought they would have been illegal due to the high wing loading and lack of stability--even for experimental... why should it be Illegal? while the Gee Bee was a relatively blind aircraft its wing loading was about half of a standard weight P51 Mustang, should they be "...

Re: Building Airplane Eventually..
"Building an airplane shouldn't be done by amateurs" Uhh, are they not known as "amateur built aircraft"? in fact that is the entire intent, and reason of existence for the kitplane, plans built and homebuilt market!!!! I am not sure the EAA would be comfortable with your comments. as an "amateur" I...

Re: Entry Aircraft
Regards the Sparcraft wings, Hedley is correct, it was an attempt to simplify the rib construction by using routed 1/4" Birch plywood ribs instead of the built up standard rib. There were problems, the ribs would crack at the webs just behind the front spar and ahead of the rear spar, as well the ri...

Re: Entry Aircraft
an S1 is a great aircraft, lots of fun, pretty easy to fly, and definately great bang for the buck, BUT it is very important to do your research when looking, as they are most definately not all created equally. amongst single seat pitts there is the following: S1C- Flat wings, short fuselage usuall...

Ok I get your point. Well to those that feel that it's stingy that I plan on getting a type rating there, I might actually get 3 at the same time. Apparently if you train on the B747-400 you're eligible to pilot the 747-300/200 as well, according to Boeing itself that posted this a while ago. Would...

re Randy's B, I think Cheree made the right choice at the time, but certainly not our place to judge that decision, so lets leave it at that. RE the S1, you made some good points, but I have to say I am very biased on this airplane, as I started flying them over 20 years ago, and still love them. Ba...
