Re: Seaplane Time

Try to avoid a "dock job" if possible. Everybody works the dock anyways all the way up to and including the otter pilot. You might as well get paid to fly. Just my opinion. Even the chief pilot works the dock at small operations. If you do work the dock and the carrot never gets closer don't feel ba...

Finally got my Radio Licence after 31 years

Well, the nice instructor in Victoria helped me get a real radio licence after I'd been flying around for 31 years with a fake. I learned to fly in 1984 and the CFI at Winnipeg Aviation administered my restricted operators exam, took my $5, issued me a licence, and then never sent in the paperwork. ...

Re: Rudder pedals

Interesting question. I never really noticed usually I'm too busy looking out the window. I'll check where my feet are next time. I fly Amphibs mostly but have flown Otters and Piper Cubs too. A Champ I once flew had heel brakes but the Beaver on wheels had toe brakes if I remember correctly.

Re: Home owner shoots down Drone. It's Started!

That's right the guy controlling the drone is "certainly wrong". I wouldn't call him a pilot. I agree with the homeowner shooting it down (if it was in his bubble). The gun-toting home-owner thought the perv neighbor was spying on him. However, using a shotgun to do it in city limits was kinda stupi...

I think Barry up at Voyage Air has one. I seem to remember hauling a few boats around for him. And he will have the proper paperwork. Guaranteed.

Re: PBY destroyed

I participated in loading effort about 20 years ago. It was a rare old seaplane can't remember the name. The guy in charge of lifting it put cables through the rear cargo doors and started to lift without a spreader bar. I was told him I thought is might not like that but he assured me it was strong...

Will Private Companies need an OC for Non Commercial flight?

Hi Folks, I heard a rumor that Transport will be requiring companies operating small planes for non-commercial purposes to get an OC. Is this just a rumor or does it have some truth to it? I fly a plane for a private company and the best part about it is that the only paperwork involved is the logbo...

http://globalnews.ca/news/2061303/viking-air-inks-deal-with-china-that-could-be-worth-billions/ Viking air to sell 50 Twotters over 5 years. With 4 pilot positions per aircraft with 2 probably at least requiring Canadian captains maybe even a few Canadian FO's not to mention the order for Viking, I...

Re: Sioux Lookout

I worked in Sioux Lookout in 1991. A lot has probably changed since then but I couldn't afford rent on a Beaver Pilot's wage (not with an apartment and family in Winnipeg to pay for) so I bought a 14' Travelaire trailer. Luckily I owned and old pickup to pull it with and also the seaplane base has a...

Re: What would you do? Advice needed

Okay here is my situation, I have been working as a flight instructor in BC for the past two years. Currently have 900TT and 150 twin pic hours.... Seems many operators find that instructing isn't the best experience and with all these lay offs going on in Alberta, manitoba.... Getting that first g...

Re: Ultra-light Down

The pilot of the sea-breeze should never have taken off. Poor decision making for sure. However, I've flown several home-built and ultralight aircraft. I've never had an engine failure on any of them but they were all well maintained. I did have one retard pilot pull a loop on me (I was right seat) ...

Re: More layoffs

I've been through a few of the downturns now. I gave up flying full time awhile ago and work in the oil and gas business now. (I also paid off my toys some time ago and have even divested myself of a few). The last car payment is on the 10th. My advice is to get out of the country and look abroad. N...

Re: Can a plane on Skis land on Sand?

The road the camels are walking on looks good. Their "camel toes" are mostly visible. I'd recommend a tailwheel aircraft loaded slightly tail heavy. I took off in 12" deep snow once with a C180 on straight wheels. My cousin and his buddy were in the back and the baggage was behind them. It worked bu...

Re: protect your freedom to fly and land

The way I interpret that part about "set apart either in whole or in part" for landing etc. is that would apply to licenced water-dromes or strips. If it's not in the VFR supplement, it doesn't exist and therefore the rules don't apply. I'll land my floatplane wherever the heck I want. Unfortunately...
