Re: Insurance for older, 80+ pilot?
FWIW, In the end, COPA came through -- that is, their broker Magnes and their preferred underwriter AIG. It's the full COPA Gold insurance (thus including in-flight hull), no restrictions at all. It's a couple hundred bucks more than the insurance we had last year (and I reduced the hull value somew...

Insurance for older, 80+ pilot?
Anyone know much about insurance for the older pilot? How do they keep flying? My dad is a PPL, 84 years old this year, and the plane he is insuring is the Zenair Zodiac 601 HDS homebuilt we built and have 550 hours on since 1999. Our insurance company just slipped a clause into the insurance statin...

airplane-car collision, Stoney Creek ON
Heard about from a friend who was a witness there on Sun April 17. Stoney Creek is down on the Niagara peninsula. A light plane, a 2 seat homebuilt taildragger apparently, hit a glancing blow on a car windshield (and thereabouts) with a gear leg as it came in for landing. Aircraft went around, had o...

Re: YAM 208 [Caravan into Hudson Bay]
[Edited: Mods said they would delete the post due to naming the pilot. Not sure why the big mystery. Family can't really stop speculation. But whatever... So I deleted the name, and the photo of him too.] This accident with ###### ####### is quite the mystery. Yes he was a skydiver; I'm guessing 100...

Re: Skydive King Air lands gear up
FWIW, the King Air wasn't just doing circuits as reported in the CADORS, but had dropped jumpers on that flight. This is what I've been told by skydivers who were there. As far as I could see from (private) photos of the aircraft skidded off into the farm field next to the runway, the damage to the ...

Re: Landing long while another aircraft is on the runway
I'm OK with someone essentially saying that I'm an idiot, but I can't learn much about the interplay of the CARs, AIM, and aviation norms without something more concrete... As for 602.21 about creating a hazard, I thought that was being taken care of by not landing towards an aircraft on the ground ...

Landing long while another aircraft is on the runway
Is there anything stopping someone from landing past another aircraft on the runway, at an uncontrolled field? Indeed, I can't see anything preventing two aircraft being on the runway at the same time. (The thread http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=72650&p=686414&hilit=landing+while...

Re: Two crop dusters collide in Rosetown.
The pilot that was landing is at fault first, you can't land when there is another aircraft on the runway, period. Just asking: Is that correct? Your post was useful, quoting the CAR about not creating a risk of collision. Landing past someone who is trying to take off does look in general to be ri...

Re: Skydiving Plane Engine Failure YXJ...no injuries!!!
Five jumpers in a 182 isn't that unusual, although won't legally work in all 182's. In the old days it was a matter of how many could cram in based on the pilot's judgment. But I've been in ones from the late 60's that were already wide bodied (quite important to fitting 5 in!), had a reasonably low...

Re: Gunther Rall - 3rd highest scoring ace dies at 91
One must remember the Luftwaffe flew untill they were either killed or put out of action by being made a POW or badly wounded, the Allies had a rotation after about 200hrs combat, thus there were no allied pilots with such high scores, I'll agree with that. Well, the 200 hrs applied to some US figh...

Re: Good skydiving outfits around GTA?
I imagine that they are all relatively safe All the DZ's in southern Ontario are regarded among skydivers as being decent when it comes to safety. In Ontario there's been only one student fatality in the last 10 years. Some places are bigger or smaller, more by the book or more casual, but there ar...

Dumb cockpit placards
I had to share a placard I came across in an F-86. It shows that dumb sounding placards aren't a new thing. At least the first part of the placard should be obvious to anyone with the slightest understanding of gravity... (The F-86 is at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum, I think on loan from th...

Re: Accident at World Aerobatic Championships
That youtube video doesn't really say much about her... she learned to fly, was scared, got into aerobatics, eventually won at the nationals, and flies an Edge 540... and the video was produced in a terrible melodramatic style. How did she get to where she was? Edge 540's don't come cheap. I recall ...

Re: Skydiving firms get tighter rules
2 quick notes: - CMank is right: Under the proposed regulation, skydiving schools would have to state to which approved organization's rules they were conforming to. It would not have to be the CSPA; it could be CAPS or USPA. - The preamble in the official NPA 99-148 proposal in the Canada Gazette d...

Re: Skydiving firms get tighter rules
Re: the 5 'co-conspirators' The working group meetings were set up by TC to consult with industry & other stakeholders. CAPS was a recognized industry group, given status by TC just like the CSPA as representing skydivers in Canada. So CAPS could send anyone they liked to the meetings. TC consulted ...

Re: Flight schools in US giving Canadian licences?
Off the top of my head: Yes there is the big Homeland Security thing for the Alien Flight Student Program. Photo, fingerprints, etc; probably a whole lot of lead time. Most training in the US requires it. There are a few exceptions, mainly the Commercial certificate, and recurrency type flying, and ...

Flight schools in US giving Canadian licences?
Asking for a friend - Are there any places where one can go in the US to get one's Canadian Commercial licence? There's the obvious attraction of heading south and blasting through a program in good weather conditions, especially for someone whose career leaves the dead of winter as the only time th...

Re: Regulations/Standards on Parachutes
I generally agree with the comments here. The price for a repack for a skydiver is around $60 now. Prices for pilot rigs may well be higher because the rigs are somewhat exotic for riggers and more of a bother to pack, as are the round canopies normally used. Riggers certified in the last decade or ...

Re: Any funky airports between Toronto and Quebec City?
I'll also vote for Iroquois. An interesting place: (PPR though) Narrow 2000' runway. Part of a municipal camp ground / golf course / beach. The circuit puts one right up against the US border. One can taxi up to the campground (through the park, over a bike path, next to houses) and camp overnight, ...

wouldn't an SFOC alone be sufficient I'd say not even an SFOC is required in Canada in many cases, due to the existing "EXEMPTION FROM PARAGRAPH 602.26(a) AND SECTION 603.37". Basically jumps in controlled airspace are OK with coordination with ATC. (The SFOC will still be needed for special aviati...

when the DHC-6 was first built and certified, it was done in Canada which did not have as sophisticated a certification process as we now have For what it is worth, a US type certificate data sheet on the web shows that it was certified under the old CAR 3 rules (before FAR 23 etc). Twin Otter gross weight rationale?
Anyone know why the gross weight for the Twin Otter goes from 11,579 lbs for the -200 to 12,500 lbs for the -300? The simple answer is the bigger engines. But specifically, what allowed the increased gross? Is the structure still the same? (Eg, I vaguely heard that the life limit on the -300 wings i...
