Re: Are We Safe?

man if you guys knew of the 400hr(TT) hornet pilots flying around, landing in Inuvik at night in IMC you'd have an aneurism... Or the 500hr QFIs in Moose Jaw. Would I trust myself as a 200hr Cpl pilot flying in challenging conditions? Never. But I would trust a 200hr pilot in a right seat with a rel...

Good thing it was a Canadian crew, I don't want to imagine what could have happened if they were TFWs

Re: Bent Harvard II - Moose Jaw

I see the Harvard II is leased to the RCAF by CAE. So who is responsible pay for the loss? RCAF or CAE or insurance? Will this airframe be replaced and is there a minimum number that must be supplied to meet the contract? The planes are owned by a crown corporation, leased to CAE which then supplie...

Re: Bent Harvard II - Moose Jaw

Case and point, the AC post election glided to the ground struck a wing and is now resting upside down mangled. Granted no one was flying it but it doesn't take much imagination to picture the same thing happening with someone at the stick. The current rumour is that the gearbox failed. (For whomeve...

What's the approved procedure when an engine failure occurs within safe gliding distance of a suitable runway?
Fly to a key position, secure the aircraft. Extend the gear and flaps. Land.

Re: Bent Harvard II - Moose Jaw

How many engine failiures of the Harvard do you know of? As far as I know this is the first one in Canada... The pilots were injured from landing a parachute in a 30kt wind. It's like jumping off a two story building that's moving at 60 kph. It's not going to be comfortable. However compared with po...

Re: Bent Harvard II - Moose Jaw

It always seems people question the decision to say good bye to the plane... I wonder why that is. If this incident is what I heard it was they wouldn't have had much gliding time before getting on the edge of the "preferred" ejection envelope. On another note the winds were seemingly gusting to 30 ...

Just saw the movie. Seem most star fighter fights are atmospheric anyways. I don't think there is to much cloak and dagger to it.. probably the same stuff the Russians have bern doing for 30 years. Saw the SU-27 in the early 90s and gawd what they could make that plane do. The BlueAngels were an em...

You'd be surprised at how much FOD it can swallow and still be functional. I think this might have to do with how vulnerable the jet is in that position and even a fluctuation of power could prove disastrous.

Re: Canada Set to Pick Airbus Over Leonardo for Rescue Planes

More important to get votes in key ridings by pork barrel politics than picking the right equipment to save lives. I'm not surprised, just disappointed that something as critical as this mission would be used as a political pawn. It's shameless and completely indefensible. Welcome to the Canadian m...

There's a conspiracy theory that claims that the jump platoon commanders are behind the closure of the airport at Namao because they couldn't complicate the organization of training for the paratroopers. Now they have to organize the logistics of taking all those guys plus kit to the international w...

Re: CF18 crash @ Cold Lake

Single Seat. Good chute reported, found deceased on SAR arrival. That seems unusual. I thought a chute ride was almost guaranteed survival, if it was fully opened high enough AGL. Is it cold enough in Cold Lake right now for it to be possible the pilot succumbed to the elements? In any case, sad to...

Re: Canadian Govt buys 18 Super Hornets

Thanks for the insight Auxbat, I was under the impression the conversion wasn't so straight forward. Definitely will make things simpler if they are able to just integrate the new frames into the existing Sqn. And Mick, you're entitled to your opinion but I'm not sure you spoke to the same CF pilots...

Re: Canadian Govt buys 18 Super Hornets

It's not a terrible thing don't get me wrong. But unless we use these to their full potential as growlers down the line, the expense of re training pilots and techs, standing up a new Sqn and the logistical nightmare of having two fleets will be a steep price to pay for a political party to save fac...
