Finding oil leaks can sometimes be tricky as just a little bit of oil can make a big mess. As stated above, my first course of action would be to remove the cowls and give the engine a good cleaning. I still hold the breaks while doing a maintenance run tied to the dock on floats.

Very sad when lives are lost in an avoidable situation.

In my personal opinion, the only advantage to draining the oil after a flight or warm up run the speed in which the oil drains.

A pre inspection ground run is beneficial for the detection of possible defects prior to the aircraft coming into the hangar (pressures, temps, mag drops etc.).

You may need to replace the bell crank as a complete assembly...

We run a 1977 180K on Edo 2960 straight floats in the summer.

Having said that, this aircraft also has Kenmore Air Harbor STCs that allow a gross weight increase to 3190lbs and a O-520-KAH1 Continental Engine.

Correct. The O-320-H2AD is rated for 160HP at 2700RPM and runs 100LL.
