Re: Don't be a scab

Let's put the ICAS issue to bed.

It was in the works no less than the week prior to averageatbest's post. First caught wind of the planned takedown on May 1st based on IT security issues that were identified the week prior.

Sad it's gone though.

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica

I hear some productive points coming out of this discussion. -Canada is not the US- we are two different countries with a different operating environment and a different set of challenges. -Similarly, yesterday’s needs and today’s needs are different, as will be tomorrow's. -That doesn’t mean soluti...

Re: CUPE and now CALDA

I definitely support the unionization of pilots and dispatchers but we have to be tactful and methodical in our pursuit for better. We do not want to destroy the very thing we are trying to improve. After all, the whole point of the various drives is to preserve the future of our industry. Isn't th...

Re: CUPE and now CALDA

Yes people will ALWAYS find something to whine an complain about. We have a hard time being satisfied with what we have. Sometimes, in our haste/greed we are reckless in that pursuit for satisfaction. Yes we will end up getting what we wanted, but we may end up with something worse off as a whole. ...

Re: CUPE and now CALDA

So people are just supposed to accept whatever circumstances they're currently in, and "imagine" that things will somehow get better? Working conditions improve through action, not imagination, and having management unilaterally change the current set of circumstances to the detriment of the pilot ...

Re: Quarterly loss

Aerobod, that's a little flawed because it assumes that revenue not tracking RPM growth is purely attributed to the threat of industrial action. It fails to account for the fact that RPM growth was probably excessive- too much capacity at aggressively unprofitable prices. Not saying that industrial ...

Re: Minisiter of Transport M Garneau braggs about Swoop

Comparing other jobs is not relevant, short of them having potentially fatal results due to poor performance. Piloting is different than sitting at a desk at 3am. That should be obvious. As is the environmental and physiological influences of altitude, light, temperature, constant sitting etc etc. ...

Re: Minisiter of Transport M Garneau braggs about Swoop

24hrs is a lot better than working 4am until 10am, then 9pm the same night until 11am.. I'd love 24hrs to readjust, just not 9hrs like I can flick a switch and "rest" on command. There's no defending these duty rules. Nurses also make more than double the first year than a 704 FO. We're comparing a...

Re: Minisiter of Transport M Garneau braggs about Swoop

Exactly, and since there aren't any rules in terms of giving night/morning shifts I've definitely had a week of early mornings ending at 4-5pm and a flight the immediate next day ending at 3am. The only way to make it work after a long day is to force myself to stay up until 3am that night after I ...

Re: They were going to lock everyone out and shut the doors?

Swoop is clearly meant to reduce the cost of running your airline. Which means front and back ends, mostly everything else is a fixed cost. Plainly its an attack on you and your colleagues careers, because really its the only place to save. Unionizing and voting to strike will probably be one of th...

Re: They were going to lock everyone out and shut the doors?

I’ll stop you there, because this is not true. This is what management has said they are going to do, but the facts suggest otherwise, and even the investors are pissed - listen to the last call from May 8. Swoop is starting with 6 routes. Out of those 6 routs, 50% completely cannabilize WestJet fl...

Re: They were going to lock everyone out and shut the doors?

The kind of flying that Swoop is targeting is to compete with buses and trains, people that normally don't fly and of course the likes of Flair, Jetlines and others. This customer base is not going to fly on WestJet or at the very least fly as much. So therefore, if not WestJet, the business goes t...
