Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
News update from the crash retrieval, being reported as hitting the ice in a steep nose-down attitude. I can't help but wonder how an ultralight with a stall speed of <40mph and an open area of ice to land on ends up in this position. Would it ever be nice to have a year in GA with no fatalities! Co...

Re: GA flight to Montreal
I remember looking into this a couple of years ago......CSS3 was one I was looking at. It's on the west side of Montreal and right off the highway. It might come down to where in Montreal you want to go. Keep us posted on what you decide on and how it goes, sure will be nice to to some travelling so...

Re: Debris falls from 777 during emergency landing.
What's interesting is that it wasn't the only uncontained Pratt & Whitney engine to fail that day....... "A B747-4F had an uncontained engine failure on t/o , initial climb out of Maastricht ap in the Netherlands(Holland). Engine debris came down in a local village close to the ap and damaged cars a...

Re: Practice approaches while vfr
Hi Ghazanhaider, I am in the same boat, here is what I am doing. Check out the book, "IFR for VFR pilots" by Richard Taylor, its got a lot of great exercises. Lots of good info here and stuff to practice VFR, IMO this should be mandatory reading for all VFR pilots. Richard Taylor also has a book cal...

Re: Freelance flight instructors in the Toronto area?
I think it all depends on what you want to do after you have your ppl. If you want to go on and get your CPL and or IFR than a 150 appropriately equipped is the way to go. I flew a friend to Chatam 2 years ago to pick up a 150 that he paid 18K for, that plane today is worth the same if not a little ...

Canadian Flyers definitely had a bad week. One student flys a plane into a hanger and then a couple of days later they lose a plane to an engine failure! Thankfully there was no lose of life and it seems like not even any serious injuries. Sure makes you wonder what happens to their insurance.....? ...

Re: Al Rubin Has Departed the Fix...
So I’m at Markham and have watched all this unfold....... The story was that Al was trying to clean up his estate before he passed. But, although some stuff has sold, all of the intact fighters and all of the trailers that are stuffed full of parts and his office, which has all of the ejection seats...

Re: Stepping up to a anphib
DJH I was in your spot 4 years ago. I bought my plane while I was still doing my ppl and went straight from my ppl to specific training on my plane. I was looking at the 185’s and 206’s but those options were awfully expensive. I ended up going the Lake Buccaneer route and haven’t looked back since....

Re: Amphibian Pitt Lake 05.19.20
I talked to the pilot in this incident and the plane was a Lake Buccaneer. Sounds like he was setting up for a water landing and got caught by a strong wind gust at just the wrong time when he was close to the water. The plane had a hard landing on the water and one of the wing sponsons partially de...

Re: closing a vfr flight plan
This problem is exactly why I ended up getting a Garmin inreach. If I am flying to airport where there is a landline or at least radio coverage then it is easy, but if I am landing on the water in a lake far away, the last thing I wanted to do was close my flight plan right before I do the second mo...

Commercial Pilot licence / Medical question
Hey gang a quick question for you. I have an opportunity it to do my CPL with an instructor that I like and is in my area, but I don't necessarily have the need for it right now, it would be for the future. Thinking commercial float flying and ferry pilot down the road. The CPL comes with much more ...

Re: Instances of reversed controls
I think in your example of the motorcycle it's not so much an example of control reversal but something that seems counterintuitive. The bike turns right at high speed because it "falls" into the corner when you slightly turn the wheel the opposite way. But the physics make sense. The only true exam...

Re: Order of ratings
Hi Braun It’s a good question and one I often think about. Here is what I have found. I reference the Brampton flight centre training page when I’m looking for rating information. It seems a lot of schools combine ifr with multi as it is advertised as a little less expensive. It seems you need 10hrs...

Ouch, that hurts! I had my shoulder dislocate 7 times before I finally got it fixed. Ask around as you want someone who specializes in shoulders, pm if you want more info. I had my shoulder fixed 10 yrs ago and it has been bombproof since, with no problem whitewater kayaking, rock climbing and skiin...

Re: Flying into USA without ADS-B
Pretty helpful map link that you can load into google earth as a .KML file and see how to navigate. At the end of the day you can get to a lot of places, just can't go into a class C airport and nowhere near class B ( can't fly under the shelf). There are still AOE that you can access that doesn't r...

hahahahaha good ol' google and wikipedia! Found it and maybe this isn't the one to play on....:) From Wiki Killaloe/Bonnechere Airport (IATA: YXI, ICAO: CYXI), near Killaloe, Ontario, Canada, was built by the Canadian Department of Transportation (later Transport Canada) in 1952 as a Cold War airstr...

Re: Kobe Bryant chopper crash
Unless there were multiple instrument failures, I don't see why they wouldn't have gone ifr at that point. Mmmmmm, interesting. Which makes me think when the pilot was denied initial clearance through the class c control zone when he requested a special vfr transition and then was put in a hold for...

Re: Landing off airport
Thanks Pilotdar and photofly for the response. It does seem a little silly that insurance would have a problem with me landing on a visibly ok stretch of asphalt when I land on the water all the time. I could easily argue that water is far more dangerous, but whoever said that what insurance use to ...

Landing off airport
Last year while scouting out lakes to land on that had good beaches to camp on, I came across an abandoned airfield by the Killaloe Vor ( YXI ). The runway is clearly marked closed with white X's but would be a great spot for a fly-in or camping location, much like what happens at the closed Cassey ...
