Re: Time to at Least Upgrade the Aurora's?
Can we blame the liberal bogeyman, or should we blame harper the guy actually running the country? I blame both; the Liberals for dragging their feet with the AIMP, and the Conservatives for failing to line up a replacement. AIMP (well, the upgrades at least) needed to happen a decade ago, along wi...

Re: Time to at Least Upgrade the Aurora's?
Essentially what happens when we operate a orphan fleet again... the Aurora's are essentially P-3 Orion's but fitted with the sensor suite of the S-3 Viking... while everyone else has benefited from the various USN updates to their P-3's, we have to develop our upgrades ourselves. At the time, it ki...

Any politician who states that decaying wrecks laying around are the property of the government and are heritage pieces makes me wonder what they are going to do about all the car wrecks that are laying on the side of the road and in the bush. I don't see the Heritage Minister making plans on remov...

Re: Canadians urged to send fighter jets to Afghanistan
I could see this happening when our ground commitment winds down. However, I do remember that the major coalition airfields in Afghanistan are very clogged with air traffic anyways, and usually, if someone is arriving with their jets, someone else is packing to go home. Most likely they will be base...

Not the fault of the ship mind you... just really bad specifications. You can build the best damned ship in the world, but if the specifications are shoddy, the end result is a shoddy ship.North Shore wrote:...Tried those already. Bought for $500 mill, sold a few years later for $30

Wow, Mr. Harper has finally said something I agree with - must be an election coming.... This is not a winnable situation, nor has it ever been, nor was it ever really meant to be. Obama's strategy of a troop increase will only serve to escalate the fighting, that much is even obvious to me, so it ...

Re: Nuclear subs collide in Atlantic
What ever happened to Canada's white elephant subs? If memory serves one was called Chicoutimi and had a fire that tragically killed an officer. I've asked myself the same question, to add further to your question; Why the hell did we buy those subs from the UK (assuming that they knew that they we...

Re: This has to be expensive...C-17 Gear up-Bagram
They don't know if there was a problem with the landing gear or it was pilot error. But I can tell you this airplane will be repaired and put back into service, as the C-17 has seen mishaps far more severe than this one and are still flying today after repairs. This bird is built tough.

Re: Feds consider $3-billion search plane buy
For those who believe the C-27J has "as low stall speed as the Buffalo", Google "EASA certification C-27J", and you will find out that VMCA is 105 Knots. You might want to rethink that statement about flying around at 80-90 knots. Civilian certification and military certification are two totally di...

Re: Feds consider $3-billion search plane buy
The Dash-8 would not be ideal in the mountains. But don't forget that the C-27J is a 40 year old cargo plane (the G.222) with new engines and avionics, that is designed to cruise 60 knots faster than the Dash, and far faster than the Buff. The C-27J was not originally designed to be a SAR airplane,...

Re: Viking Proposes Resurrection Of DHC-5 Buffalo
As said before, the Buffalo is too slow, getting too cramped, not pressurized, and is too dated. I doubt that a new build Buffalo would be a major success (or even break even for Viking Air), so we would again end up with strategic orphans... I would rate their proposal to be high risk, non-complian...

I still fail to believe that neither aircraft had a TCAS advisory. That's almost impossible. The Legacy's Transponder was in standby, you can't have a TCAS resolution or even an advisory without a Transponder. Read up on the accident before making a post like that. Wow you must be some kind of geni...

It would be better to blow money on some kick-ass icebreakers and search and rescue, IMHO. Re: Gov't scuttles ship replacement program
That's what happens when you try to build a one of a kind wonder ship that can do everything... it would have been more economical to purchase a off the shelf AOR from another nation (say Germany with their Berlin class AOR's or the Spanish Cantabria AOR) and Canadianize if necessary.

Re: What happens when a P-3 (CP-140) Stalls and pulls 7g's?
Lockheed knows how to build their birds tough. Look at how long some of our Hercs have been flying and the flight hours and cycles accumulated; we have blown well past the manufacturer's expected airframe life a long, long time ago. Hence why they are completely bent out of shape and are due for ret...
