Autonomous helicopters: K-MAX and the MQ-8C

I didn't realize autonomous helicopters were getting so far advanced! Was doing a little youtubing today and was surprised to see that the US Army has been using two autonomous Kaman K-max helicopters in Afghanistan to do sling loads to the forward operating bases for a while now. This video shows a...

Re: Helicopter Training Links

Is Great Slave Heli still doing ab-initio helicopter training? I poked around on their website but couldn't find anything. Weren't they the company that used to offer a flying job to their top graduates?

Re: Training agreement after the training?

Whether or not he knew that a training bond was standard practice, it's up to the company to make this expressly clear during the interview. I signed a training bond at the company I currently work for, as had all the employees hired for a few years before me. I later referred a friend to the compan...

Re: HELP

There's a couple wind tunnels at UBC. Talk to some of the professors there to see if you can get some time. Dr. Carl Ollivier-Gooch is an ex-NASA researcher who's pretty cool, alternatively Dr. Pete Ostafichuk is also an aviation buff. If they can't help you they may be able to point you in the righ...

Weather conditions were severe clear all over the lower mainland yesterday, I'd imagine it was very similar up at Tipella.

Re: Airbags?

Headley, you can get airbags for your motorcycle... Look up the airbag motorcycle jacket on google/youtube. It's basically a jacket with a compressed air cylinder rigged to a deadman cord (like on a snowmobile). When the biker flies off the bike in a crash, the deadman cord rips away and triggers th...

Air New Zealand safety briefing video - in the buff...

Has anyone else seen Air New Zealands new B-737 safety briefing video done with the entire crew wearing body paint? It's actually very tastefully done and it certainly held my attention better than the cheesy westjet briefings :D http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/airline-screens-video-of-sta...

STL, how do you store all your pictures? Do you ever delete pictures on the camera (before seeing them at home)? What percentage of pictures do you delete?

Re: Anyone know about a plane crash at YVR tonight?

Cessna Citation, 4 pax + pilot, all ok, no post-accident fire, a/c was reported to have slid off the side of the runway. Pilot reported gear problems before landing, nose gear either didn't deploy or collapsed on landing. The runway was wet, but not contaminated with snow at the time. The South Runw...

Re: YYC closure last night? (Dec 21)

Air Canada really shit the bed at YVR in the past 48 hrs. I heard various stories ranging from running out of deicing fluid to negligable ramp manpower, but the upshot is that many AC flights were cancelled, and many of their contract customers for ground handling/deicing were hung out to dry. Other...

Turning down training?

Hi all, I'm in a tough spot. I'm planning on moving to a new company in the new year, its a significantly better position than my current gig, but isn't 100% finalized yet. My current employer has treated me fairly well, but I've put in my time so I don't feel bad about moving on. However, my curren...

Re: Baron lands in river

Was anyone else blown away (shocked) by the fact that the engine failure occured only 4 minutes after takeoff, ATC was notified of the emergency while they were still airborne, multiple aircraft were tasked, and it still took 2.5 hours and a phone call from people who walked out to find them! It rea...

Re: Bye Bye Zoom

Well the cards are down and zoom is done - 4 out of their 5 aircraft have already been seized by various leasing agencies and airport authorities. There are lots of stranded pax, and many good employees who won't be getting their paycheque next week. I really hate to see this happen, especially when...

Re: Unducted Jet Engines.....comming back?

Agreed, the UDF is not gonna happen soon. As for Pulse-jets and PDEs - gimme a break; that's ancient technology (well, pulsejets anyways) that has only seen a recent renaissance because they're easy for hobbyists to build, run, and experiment with. When scaled up to commercial applications the numbe...

Re: Saint-Hubert Flying School in Montreal

Decent enough school with the best maintained equipment around. That said, they have a "philosophy" that they buy into pretty hard that I don't agree with sometimes. E.g. making their students buy a nice, laminated, $15 copy of the C152 checklist when other schools would just photocopy it for free; ...

@5400 - I've seen NoLinor's CV580's around the airport this summer; I thought they were still doing the Peregrine charters? Any idea what they were up to if not that? Has Pasco been running the Saab's to peregrine all summer? Loads must be waaay down if they can get it all done with saabs, no?

Hi, I'm 23 and I just graduated last month with both a mechanical engineering degree and a CPL (but no IFR), so this topic seems particularly relevant to me. I can't tell your nephew which one to do, because I'm still VERY strongly conflicted myself about the subject. On the one hand, I can walk in ...
