Re: Can you pay your way to air canada

Take the traditional route of finishing your CPL, and Group 1 IFR, then either instruct for a bit or work for a smaller 703 operation and I guarantee you'll secure a decent pilot job after a year or so. You honestly can't buy the experiences that you get from actually working in the industry. As oth...

Re: Canada given C grade in flight safety oversight, confidential UN agency report finds

I'm not at all surprised that our safety grade took a nose-dive. I've seen so many issues this past year with weather stations being down, radar stations down, and restricted ATC service causing Class A airspace closure and congestion below 18000'. I've had trouble at times choosing alternates becau...

Re: Thunder Airlines MU2 accident in Wawa

As usual this time of year, there have been some really bad runway conditions lately. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the main factor. I've had a tough time choosing good alternate airports because of delayed runway clearing in many places in Ontario this season. Some airports will say "snow rem...

Re: Being proficient

I ran out of money right near the flight test prep for my commercial license. After working and saving for 3 years, I came back and finished my training. In 3 years, expected to forget a lot, but surprisingly didn't. I went solo again after only one dual review flight, and then moved smoothly back i...

Re: Sunglasses: To Polarize or Not to Polarize

I never use polarized, for the reasons others have stated. The sunglasses I have right now have a gradient tint, where the top is darker than the bottom. It works perfect in the cockpit.

Re: Shouldn't have been sent solo...

I know there's some 14 year olds that can handle it, but I still scratch my head at why exactly they broadly allow it when driving is minimum 16 years old to drive alone. Whenever I tell people you can fly a plane alone at 14, the reaction is always shock. It sounds crazy.

Re: Diamond Crash

Very sad and quite shocking. The DA20 is a really forgiving and unbelievably sturdy aircraft. When I used to instruct on them, I did quite a bit of research on their accident/fatality record and was very impressed with how they held up in accidents. I'll be following the investigation from this clos...

Re: Shouldn't have been sent solo...

This has way more to do with a 14 year old operating an aircraft than it does gender (Like, seriously? I can't believe I need to say that.). At 14 years old, I could only drive a car with an adult present. You can't even do that in a car until you are 16 in Ontario. How they let kids solo at 14, tot...

Re: GA Pilots: Make your voices heard. Block Function

I voted no to the block function for two reasons: 1. I see it creating an echo-chamber where a person only hears from the voices they like to hear. It's not a productive way to have a conversation, and it's part of the ongoing problem in social media where an algorithm leads a person towards extreme...

There's so many good reasons to have one that aren't related to a pilot's skill level.

Re: Minimum Radius Turn back.

Unless your surrounded by steep cliffs, most descending turns would cause the valley to narrow, I'd imagine... making a descending turn no move advantageous. The emergency canyon turn, when done correctly, can be done in a very very small radius (assuming typical small plane), which to me makes this...

Re: Self paced IATPL/CPL

Is the Integrated ATPL as a self study even possible? I'm a few years out of the instructing game now, but from what I remember the integrated ATPL programs are usually done through in-classroom learning in an academic setting, because the integrated program involves so much groundschool training (5...

Re: Aerobatics Training

I haven't read this entire thread, but I will say that aerobatics need to be respected. They're super fun, absolutely, but just like how I scared myself pushing my motorcycle faster and faster, I don't trust myself to do much aerobatics. I knew 4 aerobatic pilots that are dead now. One of them was a...

Re: Forced approach - T method vs overhead 360

I know that new students need some targets to help them develop their assessment skills, but both methods always seemed needlessly complex. I had to teach it as a 360 method, with key points for high/middle/low on the approach. I never really liked the amount of math involved though in having a stud...

Successful turnbacks seem more likely to me in the smaller categories. Or, to paraphrase another poster, perhaps the instructor-pilot had read this forum, took the advice of several experienced and mature posters here, realized that it was a practical manoeuvre worth considering and had actually re...

Re: Ex-SAA pilot with 100% safety record died because his passenger was too heavy

Food for thought: I fly medevac now and I've held up countless departures for the two minutes it takes to ammend the weight and balance when the escort unexpectedly changes or someone needs to swap seats. Held up a labouring mother, burn victims, etc... for THEIR safety. There's nothing so urgent th...

Re: VIDEO: Testing the urge of attempting the Impossible Turn after Engine failure on takeoff

It works in the sim pretty much every time we've done it. Ummm... yeah... don't think I need to comment on that... Right. I guess its worth mentioning that it was in a Sim worth over 10 million dollars, which Transport Canada let's me log as actual flight time, and not some gimmicky home set-up. So...

Re: VIDEO: Testing the urge of attempting the Impossible Turn after Engine failure on takeoff

I think this debate often confuses the results of an un-planned turn-back with a planned one. I don't really understand why there's always so much controversy regarding the turn back to the field. On many aircraft it's possible, and it's even taught and practiced by professional pilots in full motio...

Re: Career as a Flight Instructor

I instructed for about 5 years and made about 50k a year as a Class 2, teaching everything. I would have loved to continue doing it as a career if the work wasn't so ridiculously stressful. It took me a while to realize it, but I was absolutely chained to a schedule and the stress seriously took its...
