Re: What's in the briefings?
As an instructor who has worked within the FTU environment as well as freelancing, I can say a lot of this information presented is valid and brings up some good points. However, I wouldn't necessarily say there is a "minimum" or "maximum" amount of briefing to get done. The PGI is to be provided an...

Re: FTU threw out my old PTR, need advice
I actually have a huge problem with this and the way the FTU conducted themselves. However, I must be clear. If you decided to leave the FTU for whichever reason, it would have been a good idea to collect your documents. Now, directly from a TC inspector during an audit process I had been through as...

Re: Flight school delays - Covid19
I'm hesitant to even post again as I assume it will likely fall on deaf ears, but I still feel its important. The link below is the growing list of doctors, nurses and healthcare officials that have died so far from Covid 19. In case you are wondering they were not wearing jeans and a T-shirt or ev...

Re: Calgary Flying Club or Calgary Flight Training Centre?
I'm a freelance instructor around the area, however am grounded due to the covid-19 pandemic. I do offer ground school options online if you are just simply wanting to refresh yourself or keep yourself moving in the right direction in terms of licensing. My company is KR Flight Instruction. Give it ...

Re: Genesis Flight Academy
I probably have an unpopular opinion here, do NOT do your training on G1000 and autopilot, at least not from the beginning. The reason being, once you have your CPL and group 1, you'll find that a lot of small operators are still using traditional 6 pack + tiny GPS, you will have trouble adjusting ...

Flight Instructors - What is important?
Hey everyone, I think it may be a bit since anyone has really explored this question but with the airlines scooping up anyone with a heart beat, I wanted to revisit something. Flight Instructors/prospective instructors...When you are working at an FTU, what is the most important thing to you that wi...

Re: Pilottraining.ca
Had a Flight Instructor candidate of mine go through Harv's for the ground school portion, and come flight test day they refused to accept a program other than the instructor's ground work. Luckily enough, myself and my student did more than the required amount of ground work and my student said he ...

Ground School - Recording
Hey everyone! I'll be conducting a ground school course of my own to a group of roughly 10 students, and I was hoping to record audio/video of the classes to be used in future projects of mine. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good way to get good quality audio and a way of recording multiple hou...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor
My instructor told me after three or four lessons to put away the checklist so i could learn to do it from memory...... I do actually agree with this approach....some what. I am a huge advocate for flow checks, coupled with using the checklist as a true check list. When you go to the grocery store,...

Re: Landing.
right, however it is an important skill to know what the cruise attitude is like when initially pitching up from the nose down approach angle in my method of teaching the landing. Especially in conditions like bumpy/gusty/turbulent conditions, all hands and feet are on deck. Even a student should be...

Re: Landing.
Stage 1: all the student needs to do is focus on pitching for the cruise attitude(4-finger reference) on most light GA aircraft while using the horizon.. Didn’t you say finger references were reasons to find a new instructor? Or was that someone else? I’m so confused. ya it was another guy in the "...

Re: Flight Test Matrix marking
I heard that the matrix system of marking comes into effect or has come into effect . Does anyone have more information. Under this system a the total number of items marked 2 and 1s can only be five . If it is more the student fails. For cpl it is four. Would appreciate more info. Thanks https://ww...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor
haha thanks photofly for actually starting this thread. As much as I don't want to admit to it, there's actually a reason I've started freelancing. FTU's generally have created a bad environment to get a pilot license, and with it, complacent instructors who are usually content with using the skills...

Re: CPL Flight Test Blind spots.
Honestly, I would put your efforts into the 2 areas most commonly failed on any ride. IE. forced approach & slow flight. Yeah I'll have to touch base with my instructor about Forced Approaches. He rarely bring them up since my PPL. Thanks for the tips! Tell him to smarten up or get a new instructor...

Re: Landing.
How accurate do you think your height above the runway should be after the flare FreelanceInstructor? Well, for the most part it's pretty damn good, with the occasional hiccup since nothing is truly perfect. However, i've been kicking myself out of the right seat with my students to solo after abou...

Re: Landing.
I've used a different approach to the flare, utilizing experience that the student should have already experienced almost on every single flight up until the landing phase of their training. Namely, power off glides(while pointing out the point of zero movement and configuring/trimming for best glid...

Re: CPL Flight Test Blind spots.
In my opinion there isn't much for blind spots or problem areas. The CPL is basically a PPL flight test, just to a higher standard and a few different exercises(spin entry, precision-180, CPL standard steep turn, radio nav). Honestly, I would put your efforts into the 2 areas most commonly failed on...

I'm a freelance Class I in Alberta, and everything people are saying in this thread...I have seen. There is one particular flight school I know of that charges $367.00/FH, and does NOT include the instructor. I know this because I was CFI there for all of 2 months before the threads started unraveli...
