Re: Operating different machines.

Apparently flying a 787 with three autopilots on long overseas legs, must be that much tougher. I spent years commuting back and forth to Europe and Africa using my Airfrance / KLM pilot ID card sitting in the jump seat watching the crews fly the airplanes. They spend hour after hour watching the m...

Re: Operating different machines.

And flying around VFR in water bombers, fire fighting, etc. and having done it for 50+ years I am sure that it appears to be easy - Regardless of your high education claim it obviously has not given you the capacity to understand what someone writes. As an example I clearly stated I have over five ...

Re: Operating different machines.

Rookie, why do so many people here think I am anti education just because it is my opinion flying for a living is not exactly up there with brain surgery?

Furthermore once one can read and write they can self educate and I feel I did fairly well in that endeavour.

Re: Operating different machines.

C.W.E.: I googled you and it appears that your 50 years of flying has been mostly fire fighting, flying Catalina's, etc. Is that correct? In other words, most of your flying has been VFR type flying. My flying time has been split between VFR and IFR and my fire fighting time was about fifteen years ...

Re: Operating different machines.

Why not share some useful insights or more interesting stories about your career? I enjoyed the story of your navigational difficulties in the twin otter up north much more than you maligning the job of a pilot. O.K. here is another one I wrote some time ago. ..........................................

Re: Operating different machines.

You described about maybe 1% of trucking. That is true, however the risk factor and concentration required is for the whole trip down the mountain. What percent of a given flight is high risk? And you can still pull over and stop. That is also true, however do you wait for spring to melt the ice an...

Re: Operating different machines.

If you believe that you are in the wrong profession. Being a pilot is not difficult at all. You need to apply yourself but difficult it's not. I made my living for over 50 years as one and yes sometimes a pain in the ass and the odd challenge but difficult certainly not. Thank you valleyboy for put...

Re: Operating different machines.

See that's the part you often overlook: you can post on avcanada and share information without claiming you are an accomplished pilot. Fair enough digits, rather than post negative comments about others why don't you post some stories of flying experiences you were incompetent in if you can't think...

Re: Operating different machines.

A friend of mine is a professional Zamboni driver. Never had any formal education. Drove Zambonis for 50 years. Back in the day when you basically had to spray the ice with a water bottle. Those were the days. He tried the trucking route. Wasn't for him. Never had an accident in his 50 years! Not o...

Re: Operating different machines.

Go land a plane at minimums on a 2500' ice strip with a 35kt gusting crosswind. At night, with dim potlights that barely qualify as runway lighting.

Re: Operating different machines.

Ignoring this dick measuring contest about which is harder, the pilot is responsible for more lives. More responsibility means more money. At least it should.
So a cruise ship Captain should be paid about ten times more than an airline captain?

Re: Swoop ?

It is called supply and demand.

Obviously someone is willing to work for what they pay so the problem lies with pilots not companies.

Re: Operating different machines.

No offense but not knowing anything about star charts and astro compasses doesn't mean you don't know your trade. 44 years ago celestial navigation was still used to navigate by, most of you have probably read this story I wrote about it but some of you may not ave so I here it is again for those o...

Re: Operating different machines.

Automatics are gaining a foothold but "old timers" don't like them as much. 18 and 13 speed is likely the 2 most popular but there are still guys out there using 5 and 4's
Aahhh yes, I spent some years driving the Mack Thermodyne with the 5 and four.

Great trucks.

Anyone that compares flying to driving a truck is either senile, a moron or just naive.
Considering I started this topic am I senile, a moron or just naive?

Considering the weather at the time and how short the flight was could it have been wing contamination?
