Re: Failed Instructor Rating flight test. Any tips to do better?
Moving forward, I would say you need to do a review of all your current PGIs and see if they deviate from the FTM. The question is here why wasn't your Class one using the FTM as part of these PGIs? What did your old class one say about this? What has your new one said?

Re: Ferry piston aircrafts across Canada
I'm with BPF. Every ferry flight that I've done has been a pain. Planes almost always sell because they don't fly enough and planes that don't fly have maintenance issues. Now throw in crossing multiple weather systems, time constraints and you have a recipe for a very difficult trip. But every fer...

Re: Ferry piston aircrafts across Canada
Risk is dependent, how long has the a/c been sitting, was it well maintained. WX is it's own risk, you have to be willing to say it's not happening today whether it's IFR with no suitable alternate in rate or VFR through the passes. 200 hour brand new CPL’s are going to pretty much by definition no...

Re: Hand flying Cirrus
sorry to go off topic but whats the nightmare problem with the engine mounting on an early 210? i haven't heard of that in my decade of owning one, have i just been lucky? All the 210s, and the 205 and early 206s the engine is mounted on the cantilever box which doubles as the housing for the nosew...

Re: Hand flying Cirrus
My advice would be if you have a nice 182, stick with that. While the 210 and Cirrus are nice planes, for the price of the Cirrus or the extra costs of the 210 you can put a lot of gas through a 182. 210s right now aren't holding their value, so expect to take a dive on resale if that's a concern. N...

Means nothing. ATPL is a piece of paper. No two pilots with equivalent hours are the same. Some will be awesome, some won't. Some will have learned something in that 2000 hours, others won't.archstantun wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 8:43 am
The guy had his ATPL as well with something like 2000 hours. He wasn't a noob.

Re: Tons of applications, underwhelmed by response
Do what most of the kids are doing now, go do a season of survey. Lots of 172s running around the country, usually based out of somewhere that's name doesn't begin with Fort or end with Lake, that could be considered civilized. Most do a season or two and get up to that magic 1000 hours which makes ...

Lists 3 during that time period, though it is definitely not comprehensive.
Aviation Safety Network claims that 100 aircraft have went missing and never found globally since 1948, so the 40 alone in BC is probably an over-estimation.

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings
I don't mean to say, but BPF don't you work for the regulator? If you feel FTUs aren't up to snuff, don't you have the power to do something about it? Personally I disagree with your assessment of the cause check. In my experience, unless you are into more complex types, power losses in little airpl...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings
While there may be type specific likely causes to be discussed, technique wise, there isn't any practice material. If one feels that students should be well versed in various different levels of power loss, you should also be worried about losses with different flap configurations, weights and bala...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings
Of course, but that's usually type specific stuff though. Well beyond the realm of the PPL flight test and associated training which seems to be BPF's beef. There is nothing that says training has to end after receiving your PPL though.

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings
3) For every actual total engine failure there are probably 3 partial engine failures, yet this possibility is almost never mentioned in flight training yet alone actually practiced. It is actually a more difficult scenario as there will be lots of ambiguity as to what is happening and what is the ...

Any idea of Pilot experience level? I don’t know, but listening to the audio....rather tentative and requested a tailwind takeoff. Having listened to it, my impression about the requesting the tailwind take off was a matter of thinking they would save a minute amount of time by not taxiing as far, ...

Re: A lifetime of learning when to fly....
The doctor/lawyer/businessman trope can be attributed to the careers that afford them the money to get themselves into trouble. Well we don't talk about poor folks doing stupid things in airplanes, because poor folks can't afford airplanes. So folks who own airplanes tend to be either a) smart succ...

Re: piper pa32 crashed last night near kananaskis village
I am wondering in cases like this if the pilot was really confident or if he was on the fence about going. Something that stands out to me is that a definite factor in his risk assessment would be the fact that it was 5 other guys he was hauling, none of whom seem to be of perhaps an older and more...
