I don't think it will be good for a pilot's mental health to be alone in a cockpit for 6-8 hours at a time for long haul flights.
For flights that are less than an hour sure why not.

Re: Private License Cost
Realistically minimum would be 16k over 1 - 1.5 years. YMMV. Try to find a school where there is good availability for both aircraft and instructors. If you can fly more frequently it will take you less time and cost less overall.

Re: Are we entering another recession?
Seems somewhat moot to argue about equity. Ideally real estate should not be investment. Seems like a terrible way to plan for retirement. I have a friend who always makes that comment about real estate not being an investment. Swears by it. He also plays the stock market with no formal education t...

Thanks for sharing, his commentary was insightful. There's a decent sim of it in DCS for anyone that wants to try it.

Is there really going to be a shortage though? I've noticed flight schools have been getting busier. Is that just me?

Re: Where is this so called shortage
Is the military really having a shortage these days? Apparently not enough pilots for the F-18s with the attrition. Read in the news today. I heard an anecdote that one is more likely to get in the NHL before becoming an F-18 pilot in Canada! Pay seems to be not bad, $80K. Tempting if I was 18-22 di...

Re: Where is this so called shortage
It's not unheard of being an FO on a jet after going through a cadet program in Europe or Asia. I know a couple of engineers that made the career change and did just that and are flying jets in Europe and Asia. Takes about 2 years. One flies an a320 and another a 747. They were in their late 20s whe...

Re: Which heading for an emergency letdown
A Cessna 150 manual I have around here says the heading doesn’t matter. Their emergency let-down procedure is to trim for 200-300fpm descent, keep the skid ball centred with rudder, and sit on your hands . Hedley would love that procedure as it dovetails nicely into his long standing theory that pl...

A more optimistic perspective:

Not sure how much of that is true for Canadian aviation. Regardless it's clear that the career is only for those that really want it

Re: Float flying techniques for the seasoned bush pilot
I like to use a log or a nicely sloped, submerged rock like a ramp to get airborne. The rock obviously has to be at the correct location of the lake and not be too pointy, don’t want to damage the floats too much.but you will get off the water nicely if you have enough skill. You might also need to...

Re: Is it a good time to change careers?
Even though there's a "shortage" wouldn't you be looking at making 40k (max 50k) a year for the first 5 years or so? Even with an income of 70k (I assume before tax) you'll have to take some amount of debt to get your training done in a reasonable amount of time. Not to mention redirecting funds fro...

Re: Actual PPL Flight Cost Totals
in retrospect I could have done it quicker. If I had to do it again I would go on early morning slots which would be 7am 6-8 months of the year. Aside from occasional haze, weather is typically safe for student solo; including upper air work.

Re: Actual PPL Flight Cost Totals
10 months to a PPL while working full-time seems quick. Were you doing it fulltime? Or is that the norm in your area? I think when they say 20k that's probably the average for non-college? Based on my experience it seems about right.

PPL flight test Navigation : "talking" with ATS
I'm going over the flight test guide and for navigation and diversions we need to simulate talking to ATS to activate / modify the flight plan. I've never had to do this since I've never done a real diversion and for my cross countries I just opened my flight plan via phone and let it activate at th...
