Safety Management System reigned in?

The following article was published by American Machinist on 11 Feb, 2024. It discussed changes in Aerospace Manufacturing but obviously focuses on Boeing given recent events with that company. In between the lines it sounds like the FAA is admitting the limits of what can be expected from SMS. The...

Re: Flight Training - Criminal Record

I have held a Top Secret security clearance and worked directly with this. That was, however, forty years ago so things could have changed. There are a lot of variables to be considered and you should probably seek the advice of a lawyer that specializes in pardons and having files expunged. Most pr...

Re: Pilots need to learn how to file CADORS

It took two minutes to find the form on the NavCanada website.

If you’ve already filled it out you’ll just have wait for the slow wheels of government to grind away. If not,

Re: foreign logbook for AME license ??

You need to talk directly to TC. Don't go to a smaller office. Talk to Toronto or Vancouver. Somewhere that has a lot of experience with foreign log books. Make them give you a direct answer. If they aren't happy with your log book then ask why.

Re: foreign logbook for AME license ??

Talk to Transport Canada.

A logbook needs to be signed by a Canadian appropriately endorsed AME.

Are you licensed in your own country? It is much easier to transfer a license than bits and pieces of experience and training. They usually account for nothing here.

Re: E license after M training

The person who has M1, M2, S and E licenses was probably quite old, I would guess. The system has evolved over the years. Not for the better. In theory, the system is simpler. In practice, it's contradictory and illogical. For instance, an M2, M1 is, supposedly, also an E. Yet there are E tasks that...

Re: Is there really a shortage of aircraft mechanic in Canada?

Canada has never had an efficient system of training apprentices. Some countries hire apprentices while still in school. Summer employment, guaranteed (almost) employment upon graduation and sometimes a small stipend mean employers have an investment in their new apprentices. It has been found to be...

Re: owner maintenance

I have dealt with an aircraft that had falsified logbooks (years worth) and brought it back for commercial purposes.

Any competent, licensed, 'M' AME should be able to do this. There's no special magic involved.

It is, however, time consuming. Get your TC rep involved early.

Re: Aviation Diploma ---> Degree?

I forgot to mention there's also Open University in British Columbia. Both Athabasca and O.U. are government funded and have been around for decades. Athabasca is larger and seems to enjoy more stable support from the Alberta government. O.U. (which has now been merged with Thompson Rivers Universit...

Re: Aviation Diploma ---> Degree?

I'm an AME, not an pilot, but I looked into this a few years ago. At that time, the only government funded degree granting institution that seemed to take online training seriously was Athabasca University in Alberta. http://www.athabascau.ca/programs/ You'd have to contact them directly to see how ...

Re: To all Experianced AME

To the original poster. Don't do this. You are 35. At one time you could reasonably expect to get an M1/M2 license in 4 or 4 1/2 years. Now, you would be lucky to get one rating in 5. If you decide you are in the wrong category and want to get the other rating that will take one year, theoretically....

Re: Transport Canada placed on short leash by Treasury Board

Government managers don't think that way. No manager wants to lose responsibility. There is no profit motive in government so success is measured by the number of underlings you have or the number of different programs you are responsible for. If a government manager with 12 peons sits down for lunc...

Re: leaving aviation for a new trade

In answer to the original poster. I would not recommend any trade where you are forced to work in certain areas, is seasonal, or reliant on the economy. That takes care of most of them. One of my sons went for plumbing for exactly those reasons. He figured whether people are making money or not, the...

Re: Who can work on aircraft?

In order for Transport to accept a log book you need to be enrolled in a TC approved training course. The ICS correspondence course is acceptable, too, if you can't attend a trade school. If you fill out a log book and get it signed it will be worthless if you are not enrolled in a course. If you fi...
