Re: Ontario flight training: Sault, Confederation, or train privately?

In your case go private. If speed is the goal the most successful pilot I’ve seen split his time between flight training and being a bartender. Seemed to pay well enough to be flying most days and he was done crazy fast. I think he went from zero to turbine captain in under four years. Also at work ...

Re: From Float flying to Airlines?

If I do start flying floats would it be harder for me to get a FO position on a multi turbine down the road Generally no, but some companies still have CPs that are biased against some backgrounds. I’ve also known some to count instructing time as zero (“Why would I want to hire a passenger?”), and...

Thanks for that. Not trying to get out of the bond, I agreed to it and will pay but I cant afford to pay it in one go (for the reason of the income received having been so low) so will have to agree to a monthly repayment. Good on you for being true to your word and your signature. People like you ...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

What's a better way to teach attitudes during initial training? I’m not a big believer in set attitudes, at least not at that stage of the game. For ab initio an ‘attitude’ is simply a lack of movement on any axis. Yes there will be some distance to eyeball some reference in front of you below the ...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

I myself would like to fight* anyone who puts a given number of fingers on the glare shield to use as some sort of reference. If you’d like a common trait of the weak aviator that might be the easiest to spot. *Before I got out of flying I used to try and educate them. Note that this post doesn’t ma...

Re: Will a bad written exam mark affect my career?

As the title states, will a bad PPL written exam affect my career negatively? Only if you let it. Only out know why you got the mark you did, and I promise it was a factor that you have control over, so use that to plot a course correction for your future studies. As for whether an employer will ev...

What happens to a pilot and his career in case of a minor accident
If he plays it right: nothing. I know pilots who have killed passengers through their own arrogant negligence and they’re doing fine. I myself couldn’t do that without being crushed by my own conscience. I’m weak like that.

Pilot pay is complicated and a large number of pilots aren’t as smart or valuable as they think they are.

I don’t have a horse in this race but from what I do know I imagine Jazz folks can keep sleeping well. If you want to stare at the ceiling all night over something think about how AC can cripple WJ by fast tracking all the applicants from there right now.

Re: Bonds

It's a difficult trade off, but in this hiring climate, I'd be extremely suspicious if you have to pay money up front, and I'd be very careful signing any bond. It's very easy to say, but put yourself in my shoes. I rack up six thousand dollars in training expenses on one new pilot. This new pilot,...

Do you know what percentage of pilots that owes you money tries to weasel out of it? It probably feels like more than it really is, this year has actually been pretty good but a year or two ago it felt like everyone was doing it. What are their favorite tactics? Simply "forgetting" to pay, or are t...

No Van time here
The C208 AFM recommends but does not demand the use of full flap on a forced landing. In my mind that makes it pilot's discretion based on circumstances.

What are my chances of getting an interview at AC with no 705 experience? It's been done before when interviews were much harder to get. My little company averages one per year but bear in mind it's never been one of the sub-thousand hour group who are climbing over each other to get to the door. I...

Especially if you really do care about correcting the problem. This is kind of more Encore's problem than anyone's. Let's be honest, the folks who missed out because a reference was misquoted instead just went to Jazz, Porter, Sky Regional, Georgian, Transat, Sunwing, or somewhere else within a mat...

Encore's reference calls suck

Look, I'm not a fan of any company that outsources parts of their HR and I'm sure a company like WestJet has enough candidates to vet these days that they could dedicate an intern or something nearly full time to the task of calling references. Instead they've contracted it out, and like most times ...

Is that being one of probably a few CPs for a national airline or a 703/704 CP for a 100% turnover bottom-feeder?
You got me on that one, I'm proudly one of them bottom-feeding scumbags. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go bully a pilot into taking off at max gross.

Re: 80k for a government chief pilot

It may surprise some, but CP's rarely make much more than pilots. Dollar-for-dollar I make something like 105% of what my top-tier pilots make. If you look at it from an hourly point of view I average out to something like 40% of what a pilot makes. And to be clear, that's time at work I'm referenc...

Hi everyone,
Just wondering, let's say you work for company A and you want to fly standby with company B. Can A contact B to see if you flew with them?
In most cases, yes. It takes effort on the part of whoever is digging up this information so the exercise actually has to be worthwhile.

What exactly do you think you can learn from speculation. Speculation from past accidents, even when eventually proven wrong by the TSB, has led to immediate improvements in policy and procedures at my shop. Productive speculation is a matter of putting yourself in that situation, asking what could...
