Re: Sullenburger - "hero" response in 60 Minutes interview
I wonder how much work FO Gyles managed to do in the cockpit after the incident? Mr Gyles went very...very busy running the check list and trying to restart the engines. That's what I would have thought too, but if you watch the interview the Captain says he took control, talked to ATC, turned the ...

Don't take the casual tone as a lack of caring.
It'd be interesting to know what the actual flight number was

Re: Sullenburger - "hero" response in 60 Minutes interview
Great interview of a classy man and crew. I wonder how much work FO Gyles managed to do in the cockpit after the incident? From the interview it sounds like the FO just saw the birds hit and the Captain took control did everything else from that point on, radios, flying, restart, etc. It would be in...

Re: Petition for Family Access to the Flight Deck
Thanks Pratt but (d) also has an (i) and (ii) which also must be satisfied. (d) in accordance with the procedures specified in the company operations manual, (i) an employee of the air operator who is not a crew member performing their duties, and (ii) a pilot, flight engineer or flight attendant em...

Re: Petition for Family Access to the Flight Deck
Just a thought about Nav Can employees getting fam flights on the flight deck. Why not ride the jump seat in the simulator, todays modern sim's are just like the real thing and there is no risk of the sim being hi-jacked without major effort in removing the thing from its mounts in the floor. Just ...

Re: Tally-ho
If tally is only to be used for bandits, why do we civi guys regularly hear it when passing traffic to a military guy? Not many bandits in our zone... or is there?

Re: Petition for Family Access to the Flight Deck
Side note to the ATC guys commenting on the jumpseat. I believe you actually do have clearance to request the jumpseat as a ride-along request with WestJet and Air Canada. I have had a couple of ATC guys in the last couple of years ride up front to observe. They had prior permission from our ops an...

Re: Tally-ho
I'm pretty sure that this is still standard phraseology for our military for friendlies or bandits. Either that or the old guys are teaching the new guys to say it whenever they spot a civilian aircraft or one of their own. Also, Nav Can 1 uses it all the time but then again... that's Nav Can.

Re: Petition for Family Access to the Flight Deck
How about opening up access for ATC on Fam flights while you're at it. We have the same security clearances as the pilots in the cockpit and if we wanted to kill somebody, we'd probably do it with our feet on the ground. It sure helped ATC/Pilot relations when we could talk to each other. I c...

Re: CMA pans Air Canada, WestJet policy on obese, disabled flyer
hahaha... goldBut doctors, disability rights groups and travelers of all sizes are calling that requirement everything from “too burdensome” to “ludicrous,” and they give the plan’s chances of working a big fat zero.
What happens if the Captain qualifies for a free seat?

Re: CMA pans Air Canada, WestJet policy on obese, disabled flyer
Ms. McKay-Panos, executive director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre, said yesterday that she has not travelled on Air Canada since 1997, when she endured a "humiliating" flight in which the airline refused her an extra seat even though "my hips were flowing over the arm rest, my hips...

Re: VFR Tower Controller Training
I just saw the new VFR sim at the Edmonton ACC, very cool. It's a 240 degree sim with very large screens. Really??? From what I've seen it looks like 5 computer monitors positioned in front of a keyboard with a semi working version of flight sim running. Is this really an improvement over the 360 i...

Re: Complaint to Nav Canada on ATC - worth it?
Obviously an over reaction but definitely an open opportunity for someone to "get even". You mean definitely an open opportunity for someone to make an ass of themselves. I'm not sure how this in any way "gets even" with the tower controller. If anything, all it does is give TC a good reason to rev...

Re: CMA pans Air Canada, WestJet policy on obese, disabled flyer
What I want to know, is if they have to let people that literally take up 2 seats onto the plane, do they give them a bedpan or a colostomy because there is no way that they're going to squish into the shitter, no matter how bad they have to go. What about the tall people, what about the claustropho...

Re: Complaint to Nav Canada on ATC - worth it?
I remember, quite some time ago, doing my ride for my private licence heading into Waterloo Airport. The examiner beside me was working the radio and requested clearance into the control zone from the west for a touch-and-go and then a departure to the east. The controller cleared us left downwind ...

Re: Waaaay too close
Down and clear on a4 not being heard by the controller or the crew should have been a good indication that there was still traffic on the runway. Should it not? No, down and clear is only required if requested. In this case the controller was working alone operating both tower and ground. He had as...

Re: Globe&Mail: Lives Could Have Already Been Saved
The thing I don't get, is everyone on here seems to be in agreement that flying in conditions under 1,000' and 3sm, is too dangerous. Everybody here said that? It can be perfectly safe flying in weather below 1,000 feet and 3 miles vis. However when there is a low ceiling and low visibility in fog ...

Kafufo, I flew out of YWG for a brief period and had no problems with the service provide. I guess my opinion doesn't count though because I have a concept of ATC procedures and seperation.

The thing I don't get, is everyone on here seems to be in agreement that flying in conditions under 1,000' and 3sm, is too dangerous. Yet instead of saying that VFR limits be raised, we're just focusing on raising the limits inside 5 miles of a contolled airport. I know lots of pilots are proud of m...

Re: Globe&Mail: Lives Could Have Already Been Saved
_dwj_ exactly. I don't think we should have more people running into rocks and that changes should be made. Making a controller determine what the weather is outside of 5miles, when they can only see 1 and have no knowledge or weather briefing of the 100's of routes being flown, is probably not a lo...

Re: Globe&Mail: Lives Could Have Already Been Saved
., encouraging a plane to press on to Vancouver rather than turning back, by allowing them to have SVFR into the control zone, is just as bad as allowing them to leave. If it is too dangerous to fly at minimums, then the minimums should be raised. The carriers that routinely fly into the zone when i...
