Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
Another misunderstanding, I said: If one is landing on a short snow covered ( 2 inches or less) strip, it would be wise to touchdown at the lowest SAFE speed ( that would entail a backside approach in order to be stable) I never said backside approaches are inherently stable or are more stable that...

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
I don't know if the backside is applicable to a canard A/C But I once demonstrated its qualities by flying 3/4 of a circuit with the A/C constantly stalling! (Muskoka Ontario many years ago) Figure that one out newbies! Smart! I hope you're just having fun at our expense or making stuff up, but the...

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
460 doesn't seem out of line on a new engine, Lycoming is fine with a 500 redline.
It may have dropped a bit if Mr aeronca had increased the rpm up to 2450-2500.

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
This is wrong. Engine should ABSOLUTELY be broken in at high power and low altitude. The best possible place to break in an engine is at sea level where manifold pressure is at its highest. An engine that is broken in at high altitude like you claim to be doing will not seat the rings. Proper break...

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
I call bullshit on you flying backside approaches using ground speed as a reference, or that you claim you do them because they are stable I said : you reduce your speed and land at a slower groundspeed WOW, what misunderstandings ! You do not land on air you land on ground, it is the speed on the ...

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
Wow. Just wow. I feel sorry for George but this is what happens when you have the blind leading the blind. Note to any homebuilders: There's no substitute for learning as much as possible yourself rather than hoping the loud mouth know it all you're relying on isn't going to abuse your engine. For ...

Re: MERGED power curve / floats posts
I call bullshit on you flying backside approaches using ground speed as a reference, or that you claim you do them because they are stable WHERE did I say I used GS as a reference for BS approaches? Or that I claimed they are stable? I will eat those foolish statements If I had written them ! I cal...

Re: The backside of the power curve
Relax Sockster, you have been trolled. All he is looking for is a response so he can ponificate and share his wisdom. You are being lectured on aerodynamics from someone who joined AvCanada about 10 months ago....as an AME. And who has since morphed into a self certified test pilot lecturing to the...

Re: The backside of the power curve
If it's a $2 million warbird, then I suspect that you would be out of a job if the owner knew you were trying things in his plane "for shits and giggles". WHO said I would do anything for shits and giggles? Here MY words The V-1 cut and stop distance is not available in these conditions WHY do it a...

Re: The backside of the power curve
If you mean the ultralight, then I'm sure the owner thinks you are awesome.

Re: The backside of the power curve
If one is landing on a short snow covered ( 2 inches or less) strip, it would be wise to touchdown at the lowest SAFE speed ( that would entail a backside approach in order to be stable) this same strip is lots long enough for a take-off but too short in these conditions for a normal approach speed...

Re: The backside of the power curve
Perhaps one of the unintentional reasons for installing Alaska (biiiiiig) tires on a higher powered tail-dragger ( other than the obvious reason- to land on rough, unimproved strips etc) is so that you can both be on the backside for take-off and land 3 point while on the backside due to the tires ...

Re: The backside of the power curve
Are you sure? I would have thought it would reduce the airspeed, I'm not sure of the physics involved that would allow it to slow the ground speed, how does that work? If there was 0 wind, then airspeed ( TAS) and groundspeed would be the same. I am talking about the ACTUAL speed you are flying in ...

Re: The backside of the power curve
In Fort Frances, I once debated with a fellow pilot concerning the backside of the power curve, In that , as you increase power, you reduce your speed and land at a slower groundspeed ! He could not believe it !!! Well lets open this discussion to newbies and seasoned bush pilots who know better ab...
