Re: FSS: what are the daytime hours for this position?
Every site is different, there is no standard. Some sites are not open 24 hours and staffing levels vary significantly depending on how busy a site is.

Re: FSS (AAS) Relocation
Some courses are given some say, they may ask for your preferences but generally you go where they tell you to/where they need you. You can bid/request transfer to a new location after 3 years or 2 years at a remote posting.

Re: Any FSS here? Wondering what that is like
I am FSS at a remote site. We work longer hours and (probably) more overtime but the pay is significantly higher. Relocation as a single person was not too difficult, the company pays for and arranges pretty much everything, but it may be challenging with a family. My site is fairly quiet but some s...

Re: Career options for FSS and ATC after leaving navcanada?
It doesn't really directly lead to anything else. Closest would be airline or rail dispatch, or airline operations type stuff. ATC and FSS require strong problem solving skills, ability to work under pressure, etc. so you can spin those skills however you want on a resume.

Re: Is FSS training easier than ATC training?
The success rate is typically much higher, and training is faster so overall I would say it is easier. Training itself is still pretty tough and high pressure with simulator evaluations that are do or die but if you make it through basic you are almost guaranteed to check out in the field somewhere....

Re: Background Check Questions
I starting training a few years ago but the background check people did call my 2 references and one of them told me it was a fairly thorough questioning - a lot more than just "is this person a good employee". If your references are not aware that they are your references it may be a good idea to l...

Re: Any updates on training?
This was my experience during my FEAST test as well. Not only that, everyone other than me seemed to be over the age of 30 meaning they were probably applying for FSS anyway. Just curious, how does over 30 have anything to do with FSS? There are people of all ages in all streams. "Be age 30 or unde...

Re: Any updates on training?
I wonder if there's a serious need to get people into training asap and not enough capacity to pull people from the beginning (ie time to have people come in and do FEAST) that might be why your FEAST score is now good for an interview when it wasn't before... just pure speculation QM ACC did 2 wee...

Re: Life/Housing in Yellowknife/Whitehorse
My experience is in FSS but I think it would be the same for anybody. Initial appointment refers to basic training. There is no relocation assistance to get you to basic training except maybe in the case where they want you to train in a region other than where you applied. Your first posting the mo...

Re: Life/Housing in Yellowknife/Whitehorse
There is company housing available in Yellowknife. No idea what it's like or how much it costs. You might find some info on ncjc.ca, the documentation that governs relocation, isolated posts, etc.
Nav provides full assistance to send you to your first posting. Pretty much nothing is out of pocket.

Re: Regarding FSS
Yet another question if you don't mind... what are your work shift schedules and lengths like? I realize they may be different from place to place so I'm not looking for a black and white answer, just an idea of your experience. My last few years have been 4 on/4 off 12hr shifts, 2 days 2 nights, w...

Re: Regarding FSS
Thanks very much. I have my first interview for FSS this week and am trying to get a better idea of the scope of the different roles so I can be prepared for the "What do you know about Nav Canada and/or FSS" question. Good luck! That will definitely be a question they will ask. Good to also know a...

Re: Regarding FSS
Resurrecting an old thread here but maybe someone will chime in... Kashep, or another FSS, could you elaborate on the FIC/AAS differences? I've read the basic descriptions on the Nav Canada website but am interested to hear more detail if you have the time. Thanks. Previous commenter is pretty accu...

1, 2, 3 is years of service, you move up one step on the anniversary of your checkout.
I believe the FICs are considered D level sites, supervisors would be E level.

Re: Regarding FSS
Current FSS here, assuming we're talking about AAS and not FIC (different courses for each). 1) NAV pays nothing to get you to basic training, but they pay all expenses (flights, moving company, etc) once you are sent to your first posting. 2) I think that number would be based on an annual salary. ...

I am FSS so maybe it is different, but medical and background checks weren't needed until we were offered the training spot. Regardless, I don't think there's any need to do it until they tell you to.

Re: FSS Assessment - Am I stuck with FSS now?
They only recently split up ATC and FSS recruitment, it used to be you apply for all and are considered for all. I suspect if you do the FSS testing you will only be considered for FSS but doesn't hurt to go through the process and see what happens.

Re: FIC locations in YEG FIR
Whitehorse is a bit different, they call it a "FIC-lite". If you train direct-entry FIC I'm pretty sure you are almost guaranteed Edmonton, unless for some reason they needed you more in a different FIR. Regardless, all FICs are in decent-sized cities.

Thanks! First got the call on December 21. Things seem to move fast once you're offered a spot. I wanted VFR but figured I shouldn't be picky!

My interview was November 2, also in a small room with two people. They said I'd hear back in two weeks but I have the same bleak website just with status "Interview". I thought my interview went really well, fingers crossed!
