I just finished a 2+ year inbound customer service position July 29th, glad to be out of there. Before that, outbound telemarketing for 4 years, pretty near damn killed me. Now I am back in school upgrading my math skills.

Charlie_G, thanks for that input. When I used to listen to North Bay's high level sector, now 121.22, formerly 132.37 a couple of years ago, it was actually quite fun listening to co-ordinated traffic going to Pearson and Ottawa or general enroute traffic going everywhere else. It just sounded like ...

Wow. Thanks Jericho. Rules can be scary. From time to time, I'll review what I recorded during the day from Toronto Center (those who know me for this lol) just to figure out how non radar controlling is like. I really like how both the pilots and controllers remind each other about general non rada...

Yeah, that's right. I read that posting on the NavCan website. Thanks for the reminder. I was just curious about those who have a preference if they wanted to transfer from hi or low alt IFR. That's all.

IFR question

Once IFR candidates are assigned their positing after NCTI, do they have the option of hi or low/approach sectors? And do you IFR folks out there have a personal preference?

A contact approach question, just what I wanted. What does a pilot do with the aircraft during a contact approach? If the weather is wide open VFR, and pilots request a contact approach well before they get field visual, do they maintain the same altitude until they get field visual?

Thank you very much! On second thought, the idea of converting FSS with VFR operations really IS something to think about. I'll leave it at that. I'll check out Amazon's website to get those books, that's exactly what I need and want. I really do hope to make it to Timmins, since there seems to be a...

I have attempted that test a few years ago, didn't pass, among the other 2/3 who were not expected to pass either. When I monitor the FSS, it's just to keep track of what's going on at the airport and getting pilots' reports of any significant weather and hearing the way they co ordinate their inten...

I 've been monitoring Timmins FSS for weather info and just to learn how traffic is manned in the control zone, so I can get the job in a couple of years from now. And Amos is a small city in Quebec. Attawapiskat I believe is uncontrolled airspace, where Toronto center requires a 'downcall' via 1-88...

I monitor Timmins FSS myself and really wonder about Moosonee, which I don't hear on their RCO 122.5, which probably explains why Timmins mans freq 122.5 7a to 9p daily instead of 24/7. Look at it this way, Timmins FSS used to man Amos Que, Kapuskasing (CYYU) and Earlton (CYXR) up until a couple of ...

Less NDB's, more GPS, approach plates!

Our local Sandy Falls beacon ZTS is now decomissionned, as are many beacon approaches across Canada, anad has now become the 4.7 NM fix to rwy 03 as the SEGUX (who comes up with these names? So, does anyone have any idea where new approach plates are?

Can I add this question then, I've been monitoring the first Jazz flights out of here in Timmins, as well as North Bay and Sudbury around 6 am local or 10 z and noticed something peculiar. The pilots request the quickest departure rwy and last week, a few straight days in a row, were cleared with 'd...

I often hear pilots mention their call signs too fast or their radios transmit too garbled and that's where the a/c type is misunderstood a lot.

Geez, look what I started lol. Most pilots have been calling the MF, right after next sector hand off, be it 60 or 40 miles back just to advise the FSS of their intentions. A few years ago, an aircraft approaching North Bay (CYYB) got the ATIS, called the FSS to intend their visual approach and the ...

This is funny, because I was in Ottawa a few years ago listening to pilots calling the tower, where the pilot responded to the tower with the ATIS phonetic letter but didn't listen to the whole sequence "It's far too long". I myself can only get the french language ATIS and only while travelling on ...

CPL_ATC mentioned exactly what I hear for our non-radar environment. Sometimes when I hear the first Jazz flight leave CYTS after 6 am local, the ZYZ controller will tell him to 'call level w/ Toronto ctr on 135.4'. Don't know if that sector on 135.4 is non radar until 10 000 feet also though.

Don't forget to make your mandatory frequency calls

Many pilots over northern ONtario are 'reminded' to call their position reports with the MF when able prior to their approach. Many pilots who don't know this rule scratch their heads and think ATC is not hotlining the airport. However, before this new rule started, most pilots WERE calling the MF b...

Look what I started with this topic  The FSS level IS based strictly on seniority, which is correct. The FSS here in town mans the local airspace here and CYMO (Moosonee), and constantly changing new voices. I'll save my examples for later, but perhaps my hometown is a popular starting place fo...

Posting after NCTI

NavCanada hosted a form over one month ago and the personnel from SHL mentioned they try hard not to send you 'far away' from home after the training institute. My question for current ATC people, what's the furthest from your hometown you have been posted?

Here's a question, if a special goes out for IFR conditions and shortly after, VFR conditions prevail, why wait for the top of the hour to update? Why not throw out another special for VFR conditions? Workload permitting, the ATIS cannot be updated with every SPECIAL that comes out like it should b...

"... you're re-cleared direct XXX en course."

Here's a short question, when a pilot requests direct his destination, despite a possible lengthy route on the progress strip and ATC approves that request instantly, do controllers actually see much further ahead on radar than just their sector to make that split second decision? Or does ATC say ye...

I occasionally tune to YXL via Live ATC and it's just like listening to YTS and YYB radio with their own 'rules' for their aerodome. Sometimes the YTS guys may not update the ATIS for whatever reason it is. Here's a question, if a special goes out for IFR conditions and shortly after, VFR conditions...
