Re: Biennial flight review requirement coming to Canada from 2024
I think the solution to this is not having (only) instructors doing the check rides. Along with the requirement for pilots to have check rides should be a short course for CPL/ATPL pilots to become qualified checkers. You don’t need to be an instructor to judge if a pilot can operate an aircraft saf...

Re: US Regionals: 100k upfront bonus for DEC captains
As Canadian pilots we need to lobby the United States Government to require AIRLINE pilots to have an AIRLINE license to fly an AIRLINER into or over the US. Americans put in the 1500 hour rule after the Colgan Air crash. There is no reason they should let foreign pilots fly airliners into the stat...

Re: Grass strip winter maintenance options
You may want to try a plow but modify it with 4 longitudinal runners on the bottom of the blade. 12-18” long 1” solid bar runners with the ends bent up a bit. Weld them at an angle to match the blade angle. That will keep the blade from ripping up the grass and should only leave an inch of snow. I d...

Re: Can we sue?
I think it would be more effective to get the US to change our domestic pilot market. The American 1500 hour rule (I do understand there are some exceptions) has had a massive impact on the American pilot wages. The Colgan Air 3407 crash lit the fire that eventually put their 1500 hour rule in place...

I’m sure you are priming it a couple times before you try to start it. Airplanes don’t have a choke, just the primer to richen the mixture for the first few seconds. What works well on some of the small continentals is leaving the primer knob OUT. Once the engine has fired but starts to stall. Quick...

Just as BPF said “For me, this is a good example of getting the "what" i.e. look at the airspeed; ahead of the "why" i.e. maintaining the desired aircraft state.” The 777 guys would have been better off looking at the N1 20 seconds earlier NOT the AI. They needed to fill in the part of the Attitude ...

All safety concerns aside (I do believe there are some serious concerns having only 1800 hours of experience in the cockpit of a 705 operation). Two regional jets take off at the same time on a cross boarder flight YYZ-JFK and JFK-YYZ. let’s compare what the folks in the front are making. Let’s star...

In your license book it says something to the effect “ALL single engine land airplanes”. Really you can walk up to that 140 get in and fly away if you can get insurance (make sure you are insured before solo!). That being said you’d probably wreck it on your first landing attempt. I’d log the first ...

I don’t think Barry (KFC) wanted the Purolator contract with the new conditions. Let’s say I had a fleet of old tired airliners with a total value of a few million bucks. Purolator wants me to buy or lease 10 newer jets worth a couple hundred million. Then I need to buy 5 million worth of loading eq...

vfrmap.com Is a good resource for viewing a VFR chart. Writing an exam you should get your hands on the chart specified for the exam. There may have been changes to airspace since the exam was published and using a newer or older map may screw things up for you. I've taken screen shots on my iPhone/...

Re: Tailwheel Checkout In Ontario?
l_reason, are you still doing tailwheel training? Yeah I'll do a checkout if there is a need. It will depend on the field conditions as I'm on a grass runway. There are lots of airports around for the actual training but I'll need to get in/out of my home strip. I'll be putting my skis on once we h...

PilotDAR, because you are off your feet for a while why not just do the instructor rating? I'm sure with a little effort you'll find a class 1 that will help you get qualified. You know a guy with an Ercoupe so using your feet shouldn't hold you back. Once you get a class 4 you'll have to work under...

By the way, are there any pilot examiners who'd be prepared to administer the flight test in one? About 10 years ago I called TC in YHM to book a group 3 instructor renewal flight test. I told the kind lady on the phone that I'd be using my own conventional gear airplane. She set a date two months ...

This stuff looks like it would do the job well, durable, versatile, portable. They may even have a way to winch the plane up out of the water or 1/2 submerge the dock then pump air back in or water out.

Re: Getting quantities of AVGAS for Hunting Camp
I would find yourself a few barrels, put them in the back of a 1/2 ton and head down to smith falls airport. I think they have the cheapest fuel in the area and it's an automated pump. If you leave the barrels in the truck I'd make sure you connect the ground wire to the barrel. You'll save about $1...

Re: Starting training, basic CPL, is it worth it?
If I were in your position I would buy a Cessna 150 or 152. You can find a good one for 20-30k, there is lots of reading to do before you write a check for a training aircraft. Operating cost will be $50-80 per hour depending on maintenance and if you burn auto fuel vs 100LL. Find an instructor to t...

I would have a really close look at a modern light twin, the DA42 would fit the bill. Fantastic avionics package, fast enough to get some decent MPG and now that there are some with IO-360's you have some single engine performance. I've never flown a Diamond aircraft but on the surface it looks like...

Fleet, you are absolutely correct that changing the ignition wires would take away from the original aircraft classic design. That's why you could just put the original wires back on it if you decide to sell. It will only take one incident of a beach 1900 smashing into a 75 year old aircraft and we'...
