Re: Winter ski operating temps
I have seen a lot of home made heaters using a camping stove, ammo box, and SCAT hose. These seem to work when the planes parked overnight bringing the oil temp up in an hour or so. For peace of mind, I'd recommend you install a Tanis or Reiff engine heating system and carry a small (one kw) genera...

Re: ATP Questions: Does Earth heated more by UV or infrared?
The Earth is heated by UV rays. Once heated, the Earth gives off infrared radiation.

Re: Spot tracker or Gamin Inreach
If you intend to venture beyond the arctic circle then Inreach is the way to go. Mine has been very reliable, and it costs me nothing during the off-season. I had Spot years ago and found it next to useless at higher latitudes.

Not 72-2 but 70-3 here. That was pre-Cornwall days of course and our school was opposite the GG's residence in Ottawa. Posted to Coppermine in February 1971. Retired now after many career changes over the last 51 years.

Re: Winter ski operating temps
Ski flying can be a lot of fun.... until it isn't. On floats you have a big advantage in that water is a known quantity: you can easily see the surface conditions and wind speed/direction from the air and can normally spot the shallow areas, obstructions and floating debris. On skis all that is out ...

DOT Radio Operators
I'm curious to know if there are any ex-DOT radio operators on here.
I was an RO from 1971 to 1973 at Coppermine (Kugluktuk), then a few months with PWA at the Contwoyto Lake beacon/weather station.
Anyone else care to chime in?

Are you on floats? Why don't you want to carry them externally? Eight 2 x 4's are an easy and safe external load on floats.

Re: Thinking about plane purchase
I bought a home-built PA-12 replica ten years ago and I'm happy with the way things have worked out. The conventional gear is more fun than a nose-dragger and those who say it will make you a better pilot may be right. Mine is 160 hp with flaps, PA-18 tail and landing gear and extended wings. It's o...

Re: Residential School Airplane
As a fifty year resident of an arctic hamlet where 90-percent of the population is Inuit, perhaps I have some limited insight into these problems (roads, addictions, lack of employment opportunities, housing shortage, etc.) All-weather roads are, of course, possible. Hell, we built a railroad throug...

Can anyone give me the current status of 5680 kHz?
Who monitors that frequency?
Can I file or close a flight plan on 5680?
Thanks.

Re: AZ vaccine suspended (again) May 11 2021
I've had both shots of the mRNA Moderna vaccine. I'm aware that I'm a "guinea pig", I knew that going in. But I figured that. at my age, Covid would probably kill me before the vaccine would. I'm faced with exactly the same restrictions as people who have chosen not to be vaccinated. No wonder there...

I have always (since 1967) voted Conservative. You're right, the polls suggest that the Liberals have now bought enough votes to pretty much guarantee their re-election.
So, this time, I probably won't vote at all. Let the bastards clean up their own mess for once!

I'm a visible minority / ethnic person / gentlemen of darker hue. I can say without a doubt that the whole implicit bias, critical race theory, etc is exactly what is is and sounds like: HORSESHITE. But more importantly, what a lot of ethnic people don't understand is that the days of someone sayin...

Re: What will happen to our industry?
Well we can also look south of the border to see how fast things are rebounding there. I highly doubt we will be the same but its possible I'd be cautious about believing anything the government says about the economy "bouncing back, stronger than ever". What else can they say but to portray a rosy...

Re: What will happen to our industry?
I'm not so sure about the "pent-up demand" and its ability to enable a quick recovery of the economy. Many people have been scared shitless over the covid, the job losses and the future. They may keep their money in the bank for a year or two

Re: Can Tourism Operators Survive Another Year of Border Closure?
So .... How many jobs in the tourism industry (specifically in the fly-in fishing lodge business) do you think are at stake? I don't imagine there will be much call for pilots, guides, camp helpers, cooks, managers, dock boys or handymen this summer. I'm surprised that any of the lodges survived the...

Certain US politicians now pushing to have the land border fully opened by July 4. Canada saying that's too early. An opening later than early August will be the death knell for tourism operators in this country, I imagine.

Re: Old fuel in airplane tanks
There's a number of factors at work here: First, if the airplane sits all winter in the cold (and I mean really cold) then whatever chemical reaction that causes the fuel to deteriorate will be slowed down considerably. Airplane tanks are vented, but the vents are small. It's not like you're leaving...

It's looking more and more likely that "vaccination passports" will be required before indulging in air travel or crossing the border by land.
