Re: IATRA Question... easy.. help me out!
Still a little unclear here, I guess I'm looking for precisely what the "Departure end of the runway" is. Single swine herder, you seem to agree with my aerocourse book in that this is the hard surface of the runway plus the clearway if there is one. I don't know where you have that information thou...

IATRA Question... easy.. help me out!
I'm studying for the IATRA using Aerocourse 4th edition book. I seem to have a problem with the answer to one of the questions. Basically, in an IFR departure one of the conditions is that you are at 35 over the departure end of the runway. I've always understood the runway to be well... the runway!...

Re: Salary for Experienced Bush Pilots on the Rise
Jeez maybe I should get back in to the bush! Been out for two seasons now. The airline stuff is exactly a job change. It's totally different (a little snoring) and the pay-scale starts over. There are perks though that I haven't achieved yet and may hold out for more. For one; it's less stressful on...

Re: Minnow Pilots
I would try to work in ear falls if I were you, I don't know of anyone else that hires for minnow pilots; lots of the other outfits the owner flies the plane or they road trap. There are two outfits down there in Ear Falls that hire actually. I worked for Whitewing years ago and it was a "hard" summ...

I'd apply for this in a heartbeat if I was living over there. Especially if this 60K I sniffed out of the chatter was for reals.

Re: Family Question
Had to go airline to make it work better. Would go back in a heartbeat if I could make the same money AND keep a family life going. At some point you put your flying or your family second. I put my flying second and will always continue to do so. Airplanes aren't that exciting after awhile... kids &...

Re: East Coast Float Flying?
I wish I could do scenic tours right out of the harbour in Halifax with a beaver or otter. It would be a blast and you might even make some money. I wonder if anyone has ever bothered to try. You could probably make some copper doing float ratings here too but i wouldn't try to raise a family on it....

Re: flying with a canoe!?
I've tried ropes and herc straps and I feel more comfortable with ropes, there's nothing to fail with ropes. And at the end of the day ropes can be a lot faster to strap a canoe on once you get the hang of it. You don't need a big nest of ropes either, but like has been said here, it's good if someo...

Re: GUSTS! Handling tips & tricks for landing on floats
Like I said, narrow lake with high sides. Crosswinds including the gusts turn into very turbulent air as they cross the top of the trees but don't necessarily reach the surface to indicate their existence (often they do); so the surface is glassy and the ride down to the surface is bumpy/gusty. Use ...

Re: GUSTS! Handling tips & tricks for landing on floats
Hey Soak, there is a situation where gusts can get a bit exciting and unpredictable. If you find yourself landing in a very narrow lake with high sides and with crosswind, you may find yourself unable to see the gusts. In fact you may be landing on glassy water despite strong winds above the trees. ...

2500/month + room and board can be done. But that's also Cessna pay in some places. Sometimes dock-hands make more than Cessna drivers and often it's because they're way more useful.

Re: 2011 Float Season
Secure a job on the dock at a fly in fishing resort. Where you work at a lodge. You'll make enough money to not get loans, then get EI in the winter and finish your flying. You'll also meet some contacts... it's what I did... worked for me. Plus spending big loans in flying may not be wise when you ...

Re: Float plane take off distances?
I used Google earth in the above post because I'm too lazy to pull a map out of my flight bag and measure. I would never use google earth in real practice. I think lake inspection is almost the most important part of a float pilots job. You can do it on the fly too or as you go with little preparati...

Re: Float plane take off distances?
All the stuff above about too many variables to give good numbers and such...that's more or less true which is why I don't really know the numbers myself. But, I just did a little measurement to get a rough approximation for ya. The guy flying a Cessna 180 this summer out of Mattice Lake by Armstron...

Halifax Flying Job?
I am living in Halifax and will be looking for work shortly. Not too sure how to go about this; I have sent resumes to companies in the Maritimes with bases in Halifax. Was thinking strongly of going out to the airport and putting a face to the name. I'd be interested in ramping to start. Any recomm...

Re: Canoe on a Float Plane Question
I'm not so sure about the canoe blanking out the rudder...maybe that's right, you tell me: If you put it on the left and you blank out (or stall) the air on the left side then probably the air on the right side will push the rudder a wee bit left for instance. So with the rudder a wee bit left you s...

With a load after an inspection on a Beaver in a small lake. Mechanic loosened the throttle friction knob in his run-up. When I took off, i put the throttle up to 36'' and then grabbed the controls with both hands (I sometimes do with a good jag on) to get on step. I also look out the window at the ...

Re: ? is there a formula for allowing...
Heh heh, yeah who wants to solve the Navier stokes equations in three dimensions. Even if you assume no compressibility and knock off the nonlinear terms (which is wrong to do) you're still gonna need a computer to solve the equations. So the short answer is YES there definitely is an equation but I...
