Re: New Pilot
I should add that to give myself a bit of extra time in the beginning, I went and bought a block of 100 hrs time on a pa-140 after I finished my CPL and flew all over to have a bit more total time than the average Group 1 CPL. It seemed to help me in getting my first job, but that was a few years ag...

Re: New Pilot
It really depends. Sometimes insurance sets the mins. For a few C182 jump ops I had first applied to when starting out, the insurance mins were around 350 TT & 250 PIC. In the US it’s generally 500 TT so not too bad I guess. As was mentioned, few aerial photography seem willing to hire lower time. I...

I am using it also currently, and it’s pretty helpful, though I agree, long with a lot of extra info. I do like that I’m able to download the lessons as mp3 and listen on my phone while I’m out running. Coupled with actual reading of the material (AIM, CARs, CAP GEN, CFS, etc.) so that I have a good...

Re: Im in highschool
Good luck in your dreams Rocky. I hope the best for you. Flying can be a wonderful career. The first thing that I recommend to young people just entering the industry is to get your CAT 1 medical first. Before even trying any flying lessons. I don't know how much it is to get the initial, but it's ...

Re: Im in highschool
Yep you can get your PPL now. And you don’t actually need a degree, though it could be helpful, as well as nice to have a structured program for your studies. I however didn’t get an aviation degree and am just fine. You can search the forums here and get lots of info & opinions on different flight ...

Re: Logging dual time on mutual flights
Not sure if this helps with clearing ambiguity, but according to US regulations, the “safety pilot” must just be certified to fly the category & type of aircraft being flown, not necessarily Instrument rated, as the purpose of a safety pilot is for “simulated” instrument flight in VFR conditions. CF...

Re: Best mini iPad for VFR
I bought a refurbished ipad retina with cellular in 2014, and it still works great! I use flightplan go, which is a great free option for US & Canada charts, as well as the CAP, CFS, & AFD for the US. I found, for my purposes, that I like the size of the mini and had it mounted on a yoke mount. Fore...

Re: How long did your commercial license take to get?
Biggest tip I can pass along: Look at the ATPL requirements once you're done you PPL. For your time building CPL make sure you do all your "general time building" at night and cross-country PIC. If you can nail all your requirements besides TT and PIC while you're time building for your CPL if you ...

Re: Canadian flight training in the US.
Also, I'm sure you've done the research, but there is the registering for the EAPIS account for the crew and contacting US customs prior to entry if landing.

Re: Canadian flight training in the US.
Just be sure to familiarize yourselves with the slightly different airspace structure and ATC rules. It's mostly the same though.

Yep, you can log dual as well as instrument time. No change. I've flown a lot of private as well as instruction flights between Canada and US airspace.

I was visiting CAT4 in December and was randomly asked if I wanted a job-told that they were having trouble finding pilots.

"We're engaging in a ridiculously risky activity, but we're moderating the risks by studying and by practising and by refresher training," .... The overall feel later in the article seems to convey the inherent safety that exists in aviation, but I disagree with his statement used as an opener as we...

Re: Advice for a 30 year old
I should mention that it took over a year to get the first flying job, and lived pretty cheaply for many years to reach the goal. If it's a real desire, you will have to make sacrifices and organize your priorities. I drove a crappy car and lived very minimalistic in order to achieve this dream. It ...

My coworker mentioned a freshly minted CPL w/ MIFR just got offered a direct-entry navajo FO position at SkyCare. I am actively seeking a position so will report back if I have any leads worth sharing. Luckily I am employed so I don't need a job yesterday. I remember looking years ago when things w...

Re: Single IFR in BC
Get the group 1. I say from experience as I had the group 3 and it took me quite a while to find a job with it. And my employer didn’t cover my eventual ride for the group 1 either. I had to cover the refresher in the sim, as well as a refresher flight in a twin, before I did the upgrade ride. You w...
