North Cariboo activity...or lack of?

Yes I used this sites search and also the Old Google. As a longtime past former NCA worker, I am wondering why the lack of activity with them. At least anecdotally while in and out of YYC. Is something up or this a seasonal slow down? if I am missing something then please link it for my reference. T...

Re: Visiting Canada Wonderland by small airplane - CYYZ?

When you say Barrie, you may want to clarify if you're talking Barrie CNA3(in Barrie) or Lake Simcoe Regional CYLS(10 minutes north of Barrie). Barrie has no services, security, FBO or lights and the runway maybe narrower than what your used to. It's 45 minute Taxi to Wonderland and bring your own t...

Re: Fire resistant clothing

Start by using only cotton, wool or silk(natural fabrics) clothing. Anything else will shrink wrap to you in a fire and you'll be wearing it for the rest of your life, whatever that maybe. Leather boots and cotton or wool socks with no lycra are a must. First minimize risk, next work on eliminating....

Re: Navajo on YYC golf course Aug 16/2024

The following is for educational purposes and has no facts or even educated guessing asscociated: Before facts get out I'd like someone with an investigating background to jump in to see if we, the unwashed masses who may or may'nt have flying experience, can get anything right. It looks like the RH...

OP: If one must ask themselves "What the hell is that?" and reject is an option, then reject one shall. Good decision and SOP discipline! As to the Amber Alert thread drift, if it was your child or loved one or those of anyone you know then would it bother you so much that some people are mildly inc...

Re: Newbie Pilot just received upfront training bond offer

Depending on how the bond is structured, you have the ability to make money on this. "Back in the day" a company I worked for transitioned into requiring a bond. However, they expected one to go to bank and set up a loan to which the company would repay(to the pilot at each pay check expecting said ...

Re: Tons of applications, underwhelmed by response

In no way am I saying this is fair or applies to your situation, but those few who came before you may have made your path a little more rocky. In my days as chief pilot for a 703 operation we had, naturally, endless lower experienced pilots apply and get hired. When the industry was moving one coul...

Conair Career...it's a good time to get on.

Conair is about to cash in on MASSIVE investments made over the past few years. Mostly in fleet renewal(R&D), contract acquisition and training facilities but also in the boring stuff like SMS, SOPs and HR. Getting in today will put you at the front of the next wave. Here is a recent article featuri...

Stop in at any base and you'll find pilots happy to give you a tour and all the details of work conditions. You may even get a free coffee or a government funded bottle of water out of the deal. At very least you will provide the locals with a reason to go outside.

The forced sale of her boat to cover the prop overhaul will be a wake up call for her. The cost of the R985 teardown, and to later find out the DHC2 owner now has a zero time engine so coming up roses, will be the penalty. 'MURCA FREEDUMB!!!!!

Everyone is different. But having witnessed given pilots training every year over many many years and myself being part of an ageing group, one thing is undeniable and that's this: LEARNING AND RETAINING GETS WAY HARDER AFTER 50!!!!!! Don't belie me, ask pilots north of 50 that had been on one type ...

If you go into this side of the industry with your priority being able to "commute" then you will be perpetually disappointed until you leave jaded and broke. Stick to the X days on/X days off companies where commuting is the rule vs exception. This being said, I will add to some of the good points ...

Re: From Float flying to Airlines?

Unless you are prepared to turn down solid offer(s) in an environment where first jobs are notoriously difficult to secure, you won't have a choice. I have been telling aspiring pilots for years that your hopes and dreams(Airline pilot, Corporate pilot etc) are in the hands of someone else for the f...

Slightly off topic but could be spot on topic. I had an engine failure once while spraying. Here are the three main takeaways that will stay with me forever: -Even though the delay in dumping the load(hence going from max weight to empty) was likely only seconds, denial will kill you. Re: FL430 for commercial airliners

Every aircraft will have an optimum and a maximum alt showing on the FMS. These altitudes vary with weight and environmental conditions but an example might be "Optimum FL377 MAX FL401". I have no idea about the most modern types you describe but it would be very unusual to have an optimum above FL4...

Most "data" is that handed down and repeated. "Fuel is cheaper than cylinders" and "1 inch per minute power reduction" and our all time favourite "Never run over square...that's what started the war of 1812 don't ya know!?". Blah blah blah. Maybe these myths all held water when they couldn't be cont...

Having absolutely no info and not second guessing anyones decisions. But does not the routing sound like someone trying to avoid a stop in Canada and the associated covid protocol hassle? Quote your supporting data for this comment please. And when you've done that here you should pass it onto Conair because they obviously could use your expertise in this field which they are clearly unfamiliar with.

What's your $day$ rate?

I am well aware that pay rates vary wildly as well as how pay is structured.ie hourly, daily, annually, base+bonus etc. I wonder if an apples to apples comparison could be made by figuring it all down to pay for availability? Eg, I get a base of $100k/yr to fly 50 days and standby another 100 days. ...

"Death trap" is a bit harsh. Re: Airspray, Buffalo, Conare and Government?

Had a long chat with a Conair guy today. It's slow so he had the time. I asked about pay and this was out of his mouth: "First year pilots should see $70k on a 130 day contract(7 are training days and 14 are paid days off) That's $55k base, 100 hours and pension/perdiems. Top guys are doing over $10...
